Engineering educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>The</strong> Department of Educ<strong>at</strong>ion offers courses in<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ional theory, practice, and research. Courses<br />

explore how students of all ages learn in different<br />

content areas, examine the institutions th<strong>at</strong> serve<br />

children and youth, and study the cultural, historical,<br />

and philosophical influences th<strong>at</strong> shape educ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

theory and effective professional service. Course<br />

offerings are complemented with opportunities for<br />

students to observe and work in a variety of<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ional settings as teachers, school psychologists,<br />

museum educ<strong>at</strong>ors, curriculum developers and<br />

researchers. Opportunities to particip<strong>at</strong>e in<br />

curriculum development and research are provided<br />

by faculty in the department and by the Center for<br />

Science and M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ical Teaching and the Center<br />

for Engineering Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Outreach. Through<br />

applied experiences, an essential part of the<br />

programs in educ<strong>at</strong>ion, students learn to integr<strong>at</strong>e<br />

theory and research into their practice.<br />

<strong>The</strong> department does not have an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

major, but offers a number of courses for undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

students interested in exploring the field<br />

of educ<strong>at</strong>ion, as well as a Minor in Educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

<strong>The</strong> department’s gradu<strong>at</strong>e programs prepare<br />

candid<strong>at</strong>es for Massachusetts Department of<br />

Educ<strong>at</strong>ion licensure as elementary school teachers<br />

and as middle and high school teachers of English,<br />

political science/political philosophy, history,<br />

engineering m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, general science, earth<br />

science, biology, chemistry, physics, French,<br />

Spanish, German, Japanese, L<strong>at</strong>in and the classical<br />

humanities, and visual art. <strong>The</strong> department also<br />

offers a gradu<strong>at</strong>e degree program in prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for<br />

st<strong>at</strong>e licensure and n<strong>at</strong>ional certific<strong>at</strong>ion as school<br />

psychologists. <strong>The</strong>se licenses for teaching and<br />

school psychology are recognized by the majority of<br />

st<strong>at</strong>es.<br />

<strong>The</strong> M.A. in educ<strong>at</strong>ional studies provides an<br />

opportunity for gradu<strong>at</strong>e students to pursue an<br />

individual course of study. <strong>The</strong> M.A. in museum<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ion prepares students for careers in museum<br />

settings. <strong>The</strong> M.A. in Science Educ<strong>at</strong>ion as well as<br />

the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics,<br />

science, technology, and engineering educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

prepare students for careers in higher educ<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

research institutions through the development of<br />

original research about teaching and learning in<br />

these areas.<br />

Media Center<br />

<strong>The</strong> Media Center provides students with inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and hands-on experience with st<strong>at</strong>e-of-the-art<br />

curricula, technological tools, and other educ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

m<strong>at</strong>erials.<br />

Educ<strong>at</strong>or Licensure<br />

<strong>The</strong> Department of Educ<strong>at</strong>ion offers students in<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong>’ professional licensure programs the opportunity<br />

to apply for initial licensure as teachers and<br />

school psychologists in Massachusetts. Students<br />

who complete these programs must take the<br />

appropri<strong>at</strong>e Massachusetts Tests for Educ<strong>at</strong>or<br />

Licensure and submit their applic<strong>at</strong>ions to <strong>Tufts</strong>’<br />

institutional represent<strong>at</strong>ive for licensure.<br />

Center for Science and M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics Teaching<br />

<strong>The</strong> center is an associ<strong>at</strong>ed facility of the department<br />

loc<strong>at</strong>ed in the Science and Technology<br />

Center <strong>at</strong> 4 Colby Street on the Medford campus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> center is involved in evalu<strong>at</strong>ing and developing<br />

new methods and m<strong>at</strong>erials for the teaching of<br />

science and m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, particularly in the area of<br />

micro-computer-based instruction. Research<br />

Professor Ronald Thornton is the director of the<br />

UNDERGRADUATE MINOR IN EDUCATION<br />

<strong>The</strong> Department of Educ<strong>at</strong>ion offers a Minor in<br />

Educ<strong>at</strong>ion. Five courses are required. <strong>The</strong>re are two<br />

possible concentr<strong>at</strong>ions: Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Studies OR<br />

Teaching and Learning.<br />

Students pursuing a Minor in Educ<strong>at</strong>ion with a<br />

concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Studies have an<br />
