Scholarship Funds ><br />
<strong>The</strong> K<strong>at</strong>hryn A. McCarthy Special Endowed Scholarship,<br />
established in 2004 as part of the Pritzker Challenge. <strong>The</strong><br />
scholarship will increase the diversity of the student body<br />
of current or prospective students within the Schools of<br />
Arts, Sciences and Engineering with preference given to<br />
the students of the North Cambridge High School,<br />
Cambridge, MA.<br />
*<strong>The</strong> Sarah Nelson McFarlane Scholarship, established in<br />
1959. To be awarded to a member of any class in Jackson<br />
College who, in the opinion of the dean or other qualified<br />
person, is worthy and in need of financial assistance.<br />
<strong>The</strong> McMahon Memorial Fund, established by the friends<br />
and family of William A. McMahon, Esq. in his memory. <strong>The</strong><br />
fund provides scholarships to undergradu<strong>at</strong>e students in<br />
the School of Arts and Sciences.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Jean Griswold Mead Scholarship, established in<br />
1968 in memory of Mrs. Leonard C. Mead by her family and<br />
friends.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Eva Mela Scholarship, established in 2012 by Thomas<br />
Mela, A’65, J’96P and Elizabeth Mela, J’66, J’96P, in memory<br />
of Eva Mela, A’65P. <strong>The</strong> purpose of this fund is to support<br />
financial aid for <strong>Tufts</strong> undergradu<strong>at</strong>e students accepted<br />
into the School of Arts and Sciences’ Bridge to Liberal Arts<br />
Success <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> program (BLAST). This scholarship will help<br />
to provide the support, resources and opportunities<br />
necessary for BLAST scholars to achieve academic<br />
excellence, and to actively contribute to their communities<br />
inside and outside of the <strong>University</strong>’s campus.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Memorials Scholarship, established in 1956 to<br />
provide suitable recognition of contributions made in<br />
memory of beloved <strong>Tufts</strong> people. Income from this fund is<br />
used for scholarships for needy students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Alex Mendell Memorial Scholarship, awarded<br />
annually to a sophomore or junior who, through his or her<br />
leadership in a variety of campus activities, brings together<br />
students representing a broad spectrum of the community.<br />
Like the student in whose memory the award is made, the<br />
recipient should demonstr<strong>at</strong>e a generosity of spirit and<br />
character th<strong>at</strong> both contribute to the self esteem of others<br />
and to their love of <strong>Tufts</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Richard Mergendahl Memorial Scholarship,<br />
established in 1951 by classm<strong>at</strong>es, friends, and family in<br />
memory of Richard Mergendahl of the Class of 1944.<br />
Guy Rindge and Alice Barbour Merrill Scholarship,<br />
established in 1997 to provide financial aid for undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />
students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Merrin Family Scholarship, established in 1997 to<br />
provide financial aid to students from the five boroughs of<br />
the City of New York who demonstr<strong>at</strong>e academic promise<br />
and financial need.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Frank Merritt Scholarship. Preference will be given to<br />
direct descendants of Mr. Frank Merritt of the Class of 1879,<br />
founder of the scholarship. Next in preference shall be<br />
some worthy student of the engineering school. For each<br />
recipient the founder has this message: “Loyalty and<br />
p<strong>at</strong>riotism are akin and are noble qualities. It is hoped th<strong>at</strong><br />
the persons receiving benefits from this scholarship will<br />
always be true and loyal to their Alma M<strong>at</strong>er, and if fortune<br />
should smile upon them <strong>at</strong> some future time they will<br />
respond to the needs of the college.”<br />
<strong>The</strong> Robert W. and Gladys S. Meserve Scholarship Fund,<br />
established in 1995 in memory of Robert W. and Gladys S.<br />
Meserve by family and friends to provide financial aid to<br />
students from Waltham High School and Medford High<br />
School. Robert W. Meserve was an Alumni Trustee<br />
(1955–59), a Life Trustee (1959–79), Chairman of the Board<br />
of Trustees (1964–69), and Trustee Emeritus (1979–95).<br />
<strong>The</strong> Millenium Challenge Fund, established in 2009, to<br />
provide need based financial aid to undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />
students <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>, and to give others incentive to invest in<br />
financial aid <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Charles L. Miller Fund, established as a bequest in<br />
1969 by the l<strong>at</strong>e Charles L. Miller, of Greenwich, Connecticut,<br />
as an endowed scholarship fund with the income only<br />
to be used for the purpose of providing financial aid to<br />
worthy and needy students of the university.<br />
<strong>The</strong> George Stewart Miller Scholarship, established in<br />
1951 by classm<strong>at</strong>es, former students, and friends of George<br />
S. Miller of the Class of 1906, acting president 1937–1938,<br />
vice president 1939–1951, member of the faculty and<br />
administr<strong>at</strong>ion, 1916–1956, and president of the <strong>Tufts</strong><br />
Alumni Associ<strong>at</strong>ion, 1954–1960.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Marion Str<strong>at</strong>ton Miller Scholarship, established in<br />
1976 in memory of Marion Str<strong>at</strong>ton Miller, for many years<br />
an active and loyal member of the <strong>Tufts</strong> community. In<br />
awarding the income of this scholarship, preference is to be<br />
given to her direct descendants.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Pamela A. Milligan and Richard A. Henige Endowed<br />
Scholarship Fund, established in 2010, to support<br />
scholarships within the School of Arts and Sciences.<br />
<strong>The</strong> A. A. Miner Scholarships, founded in 1864 and 1890<br />
by Alonzo Ames Miner, D.D., of Boston.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Tanya Mitra Scholarship Fund, established in 2012 in<br />
memory of <strong>Tufts</strong> alumna Tanya Mitra, A’10. To honor Tanya’s<br />
memory and continue her legacy, her friends and family<br />
cre<strong>at</strong>ed this endowed scholarship fund to benefit pre-med<br />
students in the School of Arts and Sciences who wish to<br />
pursue a career in medicine and who, like Tanya, are driven<br />
to help others both domestically and abroad. Through this<br />
scholarship, Tanya’s friends and family hope to share the<br />
