German, Russian, and Asian lAnguages and Liter<strong>at</strong>ures ><br />

SPECIAL MINOR FOR<br />

ENGINEERING STUDENTS<br />

Students earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering<br />

may minor in either Arabic, Chinese, German,<br />

Hebrew, Japanese, or Russian language and culture.<br />

<strong>The</strong> minor requires a total of six (6) courses:<br />

a. four language courses above the beginning 2nd<br />

semester level – 3, 4, 21, 22<br />

b. one course in the social sciences concentr<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

on the area in which the target language is<br />

spoken (e.g. for Arabic: History 60, 61, 64, 65;<br />

for Chinese: History 43, 44, Political Science<br />

126; for German: History 31, Political Science<br />

125, 147; for Hebrew: History 61; for Japanese:<br />

History 47, 48, 122, 123, 124, 125, Political<br />

Science 131; for Russian: History 27, 28, 29)<br />

c. a fourth-year level language course (Arabic 121,<br />

Chinese 121, German 121, Hebrew 121,<br />

Japanese 121, Russian 121) or, in conjunction<br />

with the social science course, a directed study in<br />

the language focusing on m<strong>at</strong>erials relevant to<br />

th<strong>at</strong> course.<br />

Arabic<br />

Arabic is the fifth most widely spoken language in<br />

the world and is one of the six official languages of<br />

the United N<strong>at</strong>ions. <strong>The</strong> Arabic Program, with its<br />

language, liter<strong>at</strong>ure and culture courses, offers<br />

training in the study of the Arabic language <strong>at</strong> all<br />

levels, as well as offering studies in topics rel<strong>at</strong>ing to<br />

Arab cultures and traditions. It offers a strong<br />

found<strong>at</strong>ion in Modern Standard Arabic, as well as a<br />

wide range of courses taught in English on modern<br />

and classical Arabic liter<strong>at</strong>ures, cinema, gender and<br />

other cultural topics.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE concentrATION<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />

<strong>The</strong> Arabic major is designed to offer students a<br />

strong found<strong>at</strong>ion in the Arabic language, as well as<br />

providing them with training to critically engage<br />

with Arabic literary and other cultural activities,<br />

such as cinema and other media. <strong>The</strong> major in<br />

Arabic requires ten courses in all: nine courses<br />

beyond Arabic 4, plus one approved course in a<br />

different department. Of the nine departmental<br />

courses, four must be Arabic language-based<br />

courses, while five must be selected from available<br />

departmental Arabic culture courses.<br />

a. Language requirement. Four Arabic languagebased<br />

courses above Arabic 4: Arabic 21; Arabic<br />

22; Arabic 121; Arabic 122; or further advanced<br />

Arabic language-based courses (subject to<br />

approval of the Director of Arabic). Students<br />

who place higher than Arabic 21 upon entry<br />

into the program are expected to complete ten<br />

courses in all, in consult<strong>at</strong>ion with the Director<br />

of Arabic.<br />

b. Culture requirement. Five departmental Arabic<br />

liter<strong>at</strong>ure or culture courses. Two of these five<br />

required courses may be filled by approved<br />

courses taken outside of the Medford campus.<br />

c. Rel<strong>at</strong>ed course. One course in a topic rel<strong>at</strong>ed to<br />

Arabic or the Middle East offered outside of<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong>’ Arabic Program. Courses in this c<strong>at</strong>egory<br />

are subject to the approval of the Director of<br />

Arabic.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE MINOR ProgrAM<br />

<strong>The</strong> department offers a minor in Arabic requiring<br />

the completion of six courses beyond the intermedi<strong>at</strong>e<br />

level (ARB 3-4) and two courses in Arabic<br />

liter<strong>at</strong>ure or culture. Minor checklist forms are<br />

Chinese<br />

Chinese civiliz<strong>at</strong>ion is one of the longest and most<br />

continuous ones in the world. Home to one-fifth<br />

of the world popul<strong>at</strong>ion and undergoing rapid<br />

changes, China is increasingly playing a pivotal<br />

role in today’s world. <strong>The</strong> Chinese Program offers<br />

courses aimed <strong>at</strong> helping students achieve<br />

proficiency in modern Chinese language and<br />

acquire comprehensive understanding of Chinese<br />

liter<strong>at</strong>ure and culture in conjunction with their<br />

social and historical contexts.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE concentrATION<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />

<strong>The</strong> major in Chinese requires ten courses: nine<br />

courses in the program beyond Chinese 4, plus one<br />

in a rel<strong>at</strong>ed field. Those who place out of language<br />

courses still need to complete ten approved courses.<br />

At least one course from C<strong>at</strong>egory B must be a<br />

seminar offered by the Chinese Program. If<br />

qualified, a student may opt to do an honors thesis.<br />
