Prize Scholarships<br />
and Academic Awards<br />
In addition to the above university scholarship funds, the<br />
following endowed funds have been established, and<br />
prizes from the income are awarded annually in recognition<br />
of exceptional academic achievement and extracurricular<br />
activities. <strong>The</strong>se prizes are not awarded unless, in the<br />
opinion of the Committee on Academic Awards, Faculty of<br />
Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, qualified candid<strong>at</strong>es<br />
appear.<br />
At an awards ceremony held each spring, public<br />
announcement is made of the recipients of these prize<br />
scholarships. Since election is made by the Committee on<br />
Academic Awards, no applic<strong>at</strong>ion is necessary. Nomin<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
are made by faculty and staff members. Student nomin<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
are not allowed, but students can discuss deserving<br />
peers with faculty members. Inquiries concerning these<br />
prize scholarships should be addressed to the Committee<br />
on Academic Awards.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Air Force ROTC Prize Award was established in 2008<br />
by <strong>Tufts</strong> Air Force alumni. First preference for the prize will<br />
be awarded to junior or senior students from the <strong>Tufts</strong><br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e colleges who are enrolled in an AFROTC<br />
program with recommend<strong>at</strong>ion to the Awards Committee<br />
by an AFROTC Staff Officer. <strong>The</strong> award is based on scholastic<br />
achievement, demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed leadership, and significant<br />
contributions by the candid<strong>at</strong>es to the university and<br />
gre<strong>at</strong>er community.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Vida H. Allen Prize is presented annually to the<br />
student who has written the best senior honors thesis in<br />
the Department of History.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Army ROTC Prize Award was established in 2008 by<br />
<strong>Tufts</strong> Army alumni. First preference for the prize will be<br />
awarded to junior or senior students from the <strong>Tufts</strong><br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e colleges who are enrolled in an AROTC<br />
program with recommend<strong>at</strong>ion to achievement, demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
leadership, and significant contributions by the<br />
candid<strong>at</strong>e to the university and gre<strong>at</strong>er community.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Alpha Omicron Pi Prize Scholarship, founded by the<br />
Boston Alumnae of the Delta Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi,<br />
is awarded to th<strong>at</strong> student who best represents the<br />
combin<strong>at</strong>ion of very high scholarship and significant<br />
particip<strong>at</strong>ion in social service work.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Alpha Xi Delta Prize Scholarship, founded by the<br />
Boston Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta, is awarded to<br />
th<strong>at</strong> junior who, throughout the freshman and sophomore<br />
years, has <strong>at</strong>tained a high scholastic record and who, by<br />
loyal cooper<strong>at</strong>ion in college activities of merit, has given<br />
evidence of the gre<strong>at</strong>est promise of future achievement.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Nancy W. Anderson Award for Environmental<br />
Sustainability is awarded to a junior or senior normally<br />
majoring in environmental studies whose work in the<br />
n<strong>at</strong>ural and social sciences, engineering, or humanities<br />
promotes integr<strong>at</strong>ion of those subjects in informing public<br />
policy decisions th<strong>at</strong> may protect endangered n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />
resources while promoting sound social and economic<br />
development.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department of Anthropology Prize is awarded<br />
annually to a student who has shown excellence in<br />
anthropological studies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Arabic Language, Culture and Liter<strong>at</strong>ure Prize is<br />
awarded annually to a gradu<strong>at</strong>ing senior who has<br />
demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed excellence in the studies of the Arabic<br />
language, liter<strong>at</strong>ure, and culture.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Architectural Studies Prize is awarded annually to a<br />
senior majoring in architectural studies who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
academic excellence and a commitment to the field<br />
of architectural studies. <strong>The</strong> prize is supported by the<br />
memorial fund for Margaret Henderson Floyd, professor of<br />
art and architectural history.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Art & Art History Prize is awarded each year by the<br />
Department of Art & Art History to a gradu<strong>at</strong>ing senior who<br />
has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed a combin<strong>at</strong>ion of superior academic<br />
achievement in course work (and independent study) and<br />
commitment to the field through particip<strong>at</strong>ion in relevant<br />
activities beyond the classroom, such as work, internships<br />
or exhibitions, study abroad, and involvement with<br />
professional groups. Attention is given to the number,<br />
range and level of classes taken in Art & Art History, to<br />
performance in FAH 100 (our capstone course), and to the<br />
quality of written work produced throughout. Selection is<br />
by faculty vote, and advisors are responsible for recommending<br />
candid<strong>at</strong>es.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Robert Asch Prize was established in 2002 by friends<br />
and family of Bob Asch to honor the former director of the<br />
<strong>Tufts</strong>-in-Tübingen program. A beloved friend to all who<br />
knew him, Bob served as director from 1972 to 2001. He<br />
was known both for his zest for life and a humanistic<br />
approach to his quest for intern<strong>at</strong>ional understanding.<br />
Awarded to juniors or seniors who will use the fund for<br />
research, projects, or internships in a German-speaking<br />
country.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Asian Studies Prize is awarded to a gradu<strong>at</strong>ing senior<br />
who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed excellence and interest for future<br />
development in Asian studies.<br />
