Prize Scholarships and Academic Awards ><br />

<strong>The</strong> R. M. Karapetoff Cobb Chemistry Fund is awarded to<br />

the two Jackson College chemistry majors with the highest<br />

academic standing <strong>at</strong> the end of their junior year.<br />

Morton N. Cohen Cre<strong>at</strong>ive Writing Award is given to<br />

undergradu<strong>at</strong>es who demonstr<strong>at</strong>e, in a substantial piece of<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>ive writing, the gre<strong>at</strong>est distinction in cre<strong>at</strong>ive writing.<br />

<strong>The</strong> recipient is selected by a special committee from the<br />

Department of English.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Community Service Award is presented annually to<br />

undergradu<strong>at</strong>e and gradu<strong>at</strong>e students who have provided<br />

exceptional community service th<strong>at</strong> is much needed by the<br />

beneficiaries, even though it often goes unnoticed by the<br />

general public. <strong>The</strong> award recognizes those who, as<br />

individuals or as part of a <strong>Tufts</strong> volunteer organiz<strong>at</strong>ion, have<br />

given special service <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> or to the larger community.<br />

Service should generally represent activities which occur<br />

outside the student’s required program of study and<br />

outside of elective office or employment.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Donald A. Cowdery Memorial Scholarship, founded<br />

in 1946 by Jeanetta Wilson Cowdery Black, F’46, in memory<br />

of her husband, Donald A. Cowdery, Class of 1939, who was<br />

killed in action in World War II, is awarded annually to th<strong>at</strong><br />

senior or junior whose academic achievements and<br />

personal qualities of leadership and high principle have<br />

been outstanding.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Alice E. Trexler Dance Studies Prize is given to a<br />

student who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed excellence in writing and<br />

(or) cre<strong>at</strong>ive work in dance courses and who has an ideal<br />

<strong>at</strong>titude about learning in the liberal arts environment.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Mabel Daniels Prize in Music and Liter<strong>at</strong>ure,<br />

established in 1960 by Mabel Wheeler Daniels, Hon. M.A.<br />

‘33, the distinguished composer, is awarded to a junior or<br />

senior who shows marked cre<strong>at</strong>ive talent and accomplishment<br />

in music or liter<strong>at</strong>ure.<br />

Daughters of the Revolution Prize Scholarship is<br />

awarded on recommend<strong>at</strong>ion of the Department of History<br />

to a student demonstr<strong>at</strong>ing marked interest in American<br />

colonial history as well as excellence in scholarship.<br />

<strong>The</strong> de Florez Prize in Human Engineering, established in<br />

1964 by the bequest of Admiral Luis de Florez, USN (retired),<br />

H’46, is awarded to an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e student, ordinarily<br />

majoring in psychology, engineering, or science, who has<br />

acquired a high degree of theoretical sophistic<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

demonstr<strong>at</strong>es an interest in the practical applic<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

knowledge to problems of human engineering.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Distinguished Achievement Award in Intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Rel<strong>at</strong>ions is given annually to an outstanding intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ions major of high academic standing who has<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ed widely in the program and who, having proven<br />

a spacious understanding of and sensitivity to the richness<br />

of the intern<strong>at</strong>ional community, intends to pursue a<br />

professional career in the field of intern<strong>at</strong>ional rel<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Amos Emerson Dolbear Scholarships, established in<br />

1947 by the bequest of K<strong>at</strong>herine E. Dolbear of the Class of<br />

1897 in memory of her f<strong>at</strong>her, the eminent scientist and<br />

inventor, who was professor of physics <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> from 1874 to<br />

1910, are awarded to two seniors who have shown promise<br />

in the field of either electrical engineering or physics.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Priscilla N. Dunne Prize Fund, founded in 1980 by<br />

Mrs. Doris Scheff in honor of her daughter, Priscilla N.<br />

Dunne, J’75, is given annually to an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

psychology major with an excellent record and gre<strong>at</strong><br />

promise of future achievement in the field.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Durkee Scholarship, established by the bequest of<br />

Robert C. Brown of the Class of 1888 in honor of his sister,<br />

Henrietta N. Durkee, WA’93, G’95, G’18, and her husband,<br />

the l<strong>at</strong>e professor Frank W. Durkee, A’88, G’89, H’21, and<br />

their children, is awarded to senior students in the<br />

Department of Chemistry who have undertaken a research<br />

problem in the field of chemistry.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Margaret Durkee Angell and Henrietta Brown<br />

Durkee Scholarship Fund, in memory of Professor Frank<br />

W. Durkee, is awarded to th<strong>at</strong> Jackson College senior who<br />

has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed high promise and achievement in the<br />

field of chemistry. <strong>The</strong> prize commemor<strong>at</strong>es Professor Frank<br />

W. Durkee, A’88, G’89, H’21, who was long chairman of the<br />

department, a renowned chemist, a man of gre<strong>at</strong> energy<br />

and diligence in all th<strong>at</strong> he undertook, and a most loyal<br />

alumnus of <strong>Tufts</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Alex Elias Memorial Prize Scholarship, established in<br />

1966 by the Brotherhood of Alpha Epsilon Pi and friends of<br />

Alex Elias within and outside the university, is awarded to<br />

th<strong>at</strong> junior or senior who best displays those high standards<br />

in community activities and in <strong>at</strong>hletic and scholastic<br />

pursuits for which Alex Elias was well known.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development<br />

Prize is awarded to th<strong>at</strong> senior majoring in child development<br />

who best exemplifies a combin<strong>at</strong>ion of high<br />

academic achievement and the promise of outstanding<br />

teaching ability.<br />

<strong>The</strong> James Vance Elliott Political Science Prize is<br />

awarded in the senior year to the student majoring in<br />

political science whose achievements best combine<br />

academic excellence with active particip<strong>at</strong>ion and effective<br />

leadership in campus and civic affairs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Frederick M. “Fish” and Dorie Ellis Memorial Prize,<br />

established in 1968 by fellow alumni, students, and friends<br />

of the l<strong>at</strong>e Professor Frederick “Fish” Ellis of the Class of<br />

1929, the outstanding four-sport <strong>at</strong>hlete of his day and<br />

possibly the gre<strong>at</strong>est <strong>Tufts</strong> College has ever known, is<br />
