<strong>Tufts</strong> Programs Abroad ><br />

languages, cultures, and societies of Africa, Asia,<br />

and the Middle East. Royal Holloway is strong<br />

across the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and<br />

arts, including drama and music.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-London program is under the<br />

overall supervision of a resident director who<br />

provides a full range of student services, including a<br />

program of extracurricular cultural and social<br />

activities, and coordin<strong>at</strong>es all aspects of the<br />

program. <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-London students are housed in<br />

college dormitories th<strong>at</strong> are loc<strong>at</strong>ed within a few<br />

minutes’ walk of the campus.<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> in Madrid<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> program in Spain is affili<strong>at</strong>ed with the<br />

Autonomous <strong>University</strong> of Madrid and with the<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Alcalá. <strong>The</strong> program is primarily a<br />

one-year course of study; however, arrangements<br />

may be made to allow students to particip<strong>at</strong>e for the<br />

fall or spring semester. Although the program is<br />

particularly valuable for Spanish majors, students<br />

from departments and programs such as economics,<br />

history, intern<strong>at</strong>ional rel<strong>at</strong>ions, political science,<br />

psychology, biology, and sociology have studied in<br />

Spain as well.<br />

Prepar<strong>at</strong>ion equivalent to the successful completion<br />

of Spanish 21-22 (Composition and Convers<strong>at</strong>ion)<br />

is required. Spanish 31-32 (Main Currents of<br />

Spanish Liter<strong>at</strong>ure) or 34-35 (Survey of L<strong>at</strong>in<br />

American Liter<strong>at</strong>ure) are highly recommended.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> director in Madrid advises students in<br />

selecting courses from the university.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program offers an orient<strong>at</strong>ion session and<br />

group trips during the academic year. Monthly<br />

lectures and receptions are held <strong>at</strong> the program<br />

center, giving students contact with important<br />

figures from Spanish cultural and political life.<br />

Students are housed with Spanish families living in<br />

Madrid or Alcalá.<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> in Oxford<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> and Pembroke College of the <strong>University</strong> of<br />

Oxford maintain an agreement under which up to<br />

six qualified <strong>Tufts</strong> students are selected to spend an<br />

academic year <strong>at</strong> Pembroke College as non-degree<br />

visiting students.<br />

Pembroke College was founded in 1624 and has<br />

a student body of 500. It is a friendly and informal<br />

college, emphasizing intellectual activity, but sports,<br />

drama, and music are also important. Oxford, with<br />

12,000 undergradu<strong>at</strong>es and 7,000 gradu<strong>at</strong>e students,<br />

is now over 800 years old and consists of thirtyeight<br />

independent, self-contained, self-governed<br />

colleges and numerous other institutes and<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ions. Students wishing to <strong>at</strong>tend Pembroke<br />

College must show college-level course work<br />

in the subject they wish to pursue <strong>at</strong> Oxford.<br />

Each applicant is required to have a 3.7<br />

cumul<strong>at</strong>ive grade-point average (on a scale of 4.0)<br />

after two semesters. Pembroke will accept applic<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

only from students who are prepared to study<br />

in the following areas: biochemistry; biological<br />

sciences; chemistry; economics and management;<br />

English language and liter<strong>at</strong>ure; English and<br />

modern languages (French, German, Italian);<br />

experimental psychology; m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics; m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics<br />

and philosophy; history; history and economics;<br />

history and English; history and modern languages;<br />

history and politics; modern languages (French,<br />

German, Italian); philosophy, politics, and economics;<br />

philosophy and modern languages; politics;<br />

theology.<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> in Paris<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-Paris program offers a combin<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> in-house courses taught by French professors<br />

and courses in French institutions of higher<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ion in Paris, notably the public <strong>University</strong> of<br />

Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) and <strong>University</strong> of<br />

Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle) and the priv<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Institut C<strong>at</strong>holique. Courses are available in French<br />

and compar<strong>at</strong>ive liter<strong>at</strong>ure, political science,<br />

economics, history, cinema and the<strong>at</strong>er studies,<br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ions, art history, philosophy, religion,<br />

psychology, European studies and intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ions. All courses are taught in French.<br />

Qualified students may apply for the full-year<br />

diploma program for intern<strong>at</strong>ional students <strong>at</strong> the<br />

prestigious Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences-<br />
