Prize Scholarships and Academic Awards ><br />
<strong>The</strong> William J. King Applied Music Award for piano<br />
performance was established by Mrs. Margaret King in<br />
memory of her husband, who was a professor of Music <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>Tufts</strong> for 41 years. Each spring, the award is presented to<br />
one or more students who demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed outstanding<br />
ability in piano performance in either classical or jazz music.<br />
Students are nomin<strong>at</strong>ed for the award by their faculty<br />
instructors based on their fall semester performance.<br />
<strong>The</strong> N. Hobbs Knight Prize Scholarship in Physics was<br />
established in 1957 by Mrs. Esther F. Martin in honor of her<br />
f<strong>at</strong>her, the l<strong>at</strong>e N<strong>at</strong>haniel Hobbs Knight, a member of the<br />
faculty in the Department of Physics from 1911 to 1953.<br />
<strong>The</strong> scholarship provides two annual awards to be<br />
presented to two juniors or seniors who are majoring in<br />
physics and who have demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed outstanding ability in<br />
theoretical and experimental physics, selected in such<br />
manner as the Committee on Academic Awards shall<br />
determine.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Laminan Prize in Romance Languages, established<br />
in 1963 by Toivo, A’31, and Margaret C. Laminan, is awarded<br />
each year to a student for distinguished work in the<br />
Department of Romance Languages.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Earle F. Littleton Scholarship is awarded to worthy<br />
juniors, seniors, or gradu<strong>at</strong>e students in the civil engineering<br />
program who are active in professional or community<br />
affairs and show promise of becoming active and loyal<br />
alumni.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Linda D<strong>at</strong>cher Loury Award in Economics is awarded<br />
annually to an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e majoring in Economics and/<br />
or to a gradu<strong>at</strong>e student pursuing a M.S. in Economics for<br />
the completion of an outstanding thesis. This prize was<br />
established in 2012 in memory of Professor Linda D<strong>at</strong>cher<br />
Loury.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Lewis F. Manly Memorial Prize was established by<br />
friends, family, and former students in memory of Lewis F.<br />
Manly, for forty years a member of the <strong>Tufts</strong> faculty,<br />
twenty-six of them as chairman of the Department of<br />
Economics. He also served for six years as head coach of<br />
basketball and for fifteen years as head coach of football,<br />
uniquely combining a dedic<strong>at</strong>ed career as teacher and as<br />
an <strong>at</strong>hletic coach. His loyalty, devotion, and service to <strong>Tufts</strong><br />
were of a high order. <strong>The</strong> prize is to be awarded to an<br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong> who combines a record<br />
of academic excellence with superior <strong>at</strong>hletic performance.<br />
Preference shall be given to an economics major where<br />
there is a choice among otherwise highly qualified<br />
candid<strong>at</strong>es.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Lt. Commander Robert James Manning Memorial<br />
Prize is awarded annually to an engineering undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />
who is industrious, competent, enthusiastic, and who<br />
shows the same commitment to excellence th<strong>at</strong> Lt.<br />
Commander Manning demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed throughout his life.<br />
<strong>The</strong> prize was established in 1990 by Lt. Commander<br />
Manning’s wife Nancy E. Manning, and by his parents<br />
Mr. and Mrs. Edward V. Manning, with the support of his<br />
friends and family. Lt. Commander Manning was a 1970<br />
<strong>Tufts</strong> gradu<strong>at</strong>e.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Vincent Manno Leadership Award, named for former<br />
<strong>Tufts</strong> Mechanical Engineering Professor Vincent Manno, is<br />
given annually to a Mechanical Engineering or Human<br />
Factors student th<strong>at</strong> has excelled in a leadership role.<br />
Demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed leadership may be rel<strong>at</strong>ed to a class project<br />
(e.g. senior design), or to on-campus clubs and competitions<br />
sponsored by technical societies. <strong>The</strong> student should<br />
have demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed vision, communic<strong>at</strong>ions skills, and an<br />
ability to motiv<strong>at</strong>e and lead a team to achieve specific<br />
objectives with excellence under various resource<br />
constraints (e.g., manpower, budget, schedule, and<br />
specific<strong>at</strong>ions).<br />
<strong>The</strong> Mechanical Engineering Prize is awarded to a senior<br />
who, in the judgment of the mechanical engineering<br />
faculty, has excelled in the study of Mechanical Engineering.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Alex Mendell Memorial Scholarship is awarded<br />
annually to a sophomore or junior who, through his or her<br />
leadership in a variety of campus activities, brings together<br />
students representing a broad spectrum of the community.<br />
Like the student in whose memory the award is made, the<br />
recipient should demonstr<strong>at</strong>e a generosity of spirit and<br />
character th<strong>at</strong> both contributes to the self-esteem of others<br />
and to their love of <strong>Tufts</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Melissa Beth Meyers Award is presented annually to<br />
a gradu<strong>at</strong>ing BFA or BFA in art educ<strong>at</strong>ion student in<br />
recognition of academic excellence, personal growth and<br />
his/her ability to achieve this success while overcoming<br />
substantial educ<strong>at</strong>ional and/or personal obstacles.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Russell E. Miller History Prize is awarded to an<br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e of exceptional ability whose particip<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />
advanced history courses has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed an eagerness<br />
to explore problems of historical analysis and interpret<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Adrian Misic Prize Fund, the Department of<br />
Athletics awards a student who demonstr<strong>at</strong>es excellence<br />
<strong>at</strong>hletically and academically and is active in work which<br />
helps improve the human condition.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Paul Montle Prize Scholarship is awarded to<br />
upperclassmen or women who demonstr<strong>at</strong>e entrepreneurial<br />
skills and who accept along with the scholarship a moral<br />
oblig<strong>at</strong>ion to return to <strong>Tufts</strong> l<strong>at</strong>er in life, much more than<br />
they received, in terms of financial aid and educ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
