Prize Scholarships and Academic Awards ><br />
<strong>The</strong> Helen Morris Cartwright Memorial Prize is awarded<br />
to th<strong>at</strong> senior who, in the judgment of the Department of<br />
Philosophy, has shown outstanding philosophical ability,<br />
both orally and in writing.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>The</strong>resa McDermott Carzo Award in honor of <strong>The</strong>resa<br />
McDermott Carzo, a 1984 gradu<strong>at</strong>e of <strong>Tufts</strong> through the<br />
Resumed Educ<strong>at</strong>ion for Adult Learners Program, is given to<br />
a student in the Resumed Educ<strong>at</strong>ion for Adult Learners<br />
Program who demonstr<strong>at</strong>es a love of learning and the<br />
determin<strong>at</strong>ion necessary to return to college to complete a<br />
degree despite obstacles.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Madeline Harrison Caviness Prize, established by the<br />
Department of Art and Art History in honor of our<br />
esteemed senior colleague, will be awarded annually to the<br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e major whose senior honors thesis merits<br />
recognition for its intellectual rigor, cre<strong>at</strong>ivity, and scholarly<br />
promise.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Mary Grant Charles Prize Scholarship Fund,<br />
established in 1975 by Ralph S. Charles, A’23, and his two<br />
sons, Grant H. Charles, A’51, and Ronald A. Charles, E’57, in<br />
loving memory of wife and mother, Mary Grant Charles, is<br />
awarded to an outstanding undergradu<strong>at</strong>e possessing the<br />
same cre<strong>at</strong>ive qualities in the writing of prose and poetry as<br />
Mrs. Charles, and preferentially to a student whose writing<br />
reflects an interest in ancestry and genealogy.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Shirley and Stanley Charm Scholarship in Food and<br />
Biotechnology, established in 1984 by Dr. Stanley Charm,<br />
who was chair of the Chemical Engineering Department<br />
from 1981 to 1985, is used in the Department of Chemical<br />
and Biological Engineering as a stipend for a senior,<br />
gradu<strong>at</strong>e, or postdoctoral student who is committed to<br />
study and research in food science or biotechnology.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering<br />
Prize is awarded to a senior who has shown excellence in<br />
chemical engineering studies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Chemical Engineering Special Recognition Award<br />
is awarded to a senior who has shown character and<br />
perseverance in achieving high academic standards in<br />
chemical engineering studies while overcoming difficult<br />
circumstances.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Chinese Language and Liter<strong>at</strong>ure Prize is awarded<br />
annually to a gradu<strong>at</strong>ing senior who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
excellence in the studies of Chinese language, liter<strong>at</strong>ure,<br />
and culture.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Anna Quincy Churchill Prizes in General Biology,<br />
established in 1954 by Dr. Churchill, M’17, a member of the<br />
an<strong>at</strong>omy department in the <strong>Tufts</strong> School of Medicine and<br />
Dental Medicine from 1918 until her retirement as assistant<br />
professor emerita in 1954, are awarded annually for<br />
excellence in the study of botany and zoology in the<br />
general biology course.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Gemma Cifarelli Memorial Scholarship, established<br />
in 1956 by classm<strong>at</strong>es and fellow students in memory of<br />
Gemma Cifarelli of the Class of 1957, is awarded to a junior<br />
who has combined good academic standing with particip<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
in activities of importance to the university.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Prize Scholarship of the Class of 1882, founded by<br />
Dr. Arthur Winslow Pierce, A’82, Litt. D.’99, in the name of his<br />
college class, is reserved for an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e student with<br />
gre<strong>at</strong> potential for intellectual leadership and cre<strong>at</strong>ivity.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Class of 1898 Prizes, from a fund established by the<br />
Class of 1898, are awarded as follows: one prize each to th<strong>at</strong><br />
student in the College of Liberal Arts, in Jackson College,<br />
and in the College of Engineering who, having completed<br />
two years <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong>, has best demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed high<br />
scholarly ability together with a wide range of intellectual<br />
interests and competence.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Class of 1911 Prize Scholarships, from the Class of<br />
1911 Fund, are awarded to seniors of engaging personality<br />
who, from m<strong>at</strong>ricul<strong>at</strong>ion as freshmen to the senior year,<br />
have, in the judgment of the Committee on Academic<br />
Awards, made most progress as measured both by<br />
academic record and by successful particip<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />
extracurricular activities of enduring worth.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Class of 1921—Leonard Carmichael Prize<br />
Scholarship Fund, established through the gifts of<br />
members and friends of the Class of 1921 in honor and<br />
memory of their classm<strong>at</strong>e Leonard Carmichael, seventh<br />
president of <strong>Tufts</strong>, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution,<br />
and vice president of the N<strong>at</strong>ional Geographic Society<br />
with special responsibilities for research and explor<strong>at</strong>ion, is<br />
awarded by the Department of Psychology to a third-year<br />
student or students whose academic achievements have<br />
been judged as outstanding.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Class of 1942 Prize Scholarship was founded in 1985<br />
by Elaine and Grant Curtis in honor of the women and men<br />
of the class who served their country, and in particular the<br />
five who served their Alma M<strong>at</strong>er for more than an<br />
aggreg<strong>at</strong>e 125 years (Professor Freeland Abbott, Dean<br />
Grant Curtis, Dr. Nelson Fontneau, Professor Burleigh<br />
Wellington, and William Wells, Esq.). <strong>The</strong> prize is awarded<br />
annually to seniors considered by other undergradu<strong>at</strong>es,<br />
faculty, or staff as “the most likely to become outstanding<br />
university teachers, counselors, or administr<strong>at</strong>ors.” Written<br />
nomin<strong>at</strong>ions, stressing how the nominee has already<br />
served or contributed to the university, should be sent to<br />
the Faculty Committee on Academic Awards.<br />
