Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School of Arts and Sciences ><br />

normally have instructional responsibility in the<br />

recit<strong>at</strong>ion or labor<strong>at</strong>ory sections of courses to which<br />

they are assigned, or their work involves grading<br />

papers and examin<strong>at</strong>ions. Intern<strong>at</strong>ional students are<br />

not usually eligible for appointment as teaching<br />

assistants in their first year of gradu<strong>at</strong>e work unless<br />

they have demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed proficiency in spoken<br />

English or they have received training <strong>at</strong> another<br />

American university.<br />

Appointments to these positions are based on<br />

the recommend<strong>at</strong>ion of a student’s department<br />

chair or appropri<strong>at</strong>e departmental gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

committee and are made for periods of one<br />

academic year or one semester, but are renewable.<br />

<strong>The</strong> university reserves the right to termin<strong>at</strong>e an<br />

appointment <strong>at</strong> any time for due cause. Inadequ<strong>at</strong>e<br />

degree progress as defined by departmental or<br />

program standards may constitute cause. Also,<br />

academic dishonesty may constitute cause, as may<br />

incomplete or false inform<strong>at</strong>ion on the applic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

forms to the gradu<strong>at</strong>e school. In all instances of<br />

dismissal, the student will be notified in writing of<br />

the reasons for the termin<strong>at</strong>ion and may appeal the<br />

decision to the dean.<br />

Stipend levels vary by department. All stipends<br />

are taxable by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.<br />

Pror<strong>at</strong>ed fractions of these stipends are made based<br />

on the actual time commitments of a given<br />

assistantship.<br />

Resident Proctors<br />

A limited number of positions are available for<br />

both married and unmarried gradu<strong>at</strong>e students as<br />

proctors in university residence halls. Remuner<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

includes rent-free accommod<strong>at</strong>ions and a stipend.<br />

Applic<strong>at</strong>ions are available <strong>at</strong> the Office of Residential<br />

Life. Appointments involve a commitment for a<br />

full academic year.<br />

Financial Aid<br />

Inform<strong>at</strong>ion on other types of financial assistance,<br />

including various loan programs, is available from<br />

Student Financial Services <strong>at</strong> http://uss.tufts.edu/<br />

finaid/gradaid. Students seeking part-time work on<br />

campus should contact Student Employment in<br />

Dowling Hall.<br />

Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Institute for Teaching<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Institute For Teaching (GIFT)<br />

offers a program for gradu<strong>at</strong>e students who are<br />

interested in becoming college-level faculty. GIFT<br />

students <strong>at</strong>tend specialized workshops on pedagogy<br />

during the summer and have the opportunity to<br />

co-teach a fall semester course under the direction<br />

of a faculty mentor. Students receive a stipend for<br />

Research Assistants<br />

Research assistants are gradu<strong>at</strong>e students who<br />

actively particip<strong>at</strong>e in the ongoing research program<br />

of a faculty mentor. Stipends are sometimes<br />

available during the summers as well as during the<br />

academic year. Stipend levels follow those of<br />

teaching assistants. Research assistantships are<br />

normally awarded through the department chair or<br />

research program director.<br />
