As one of the first <strong>in</strong>stitutions to use the vendor’s order set creation scheme,<br />

the order set development tools required ref<strong>in</strong>ement; and resultant order sets<br />

produced by these tools required extensive test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation electronic <strong>in</strong>creases its transparency. Be<strong>in</strong>g able to view care<br />

plans made by other subspecialists helped to streaml<strong>in</strong>e labs and make potential<br />

<strong>in</strong>compatibilities more apparent. The automatic generation of a cl<strong>in</strong>ic visit summary<br />

with patient <strong>in</strong>structions for families has also helped this process.<br />

It is possible to successfully implement CPOE <strong>in</strong> the ambulatory sett<strong>in</strong>g. Hav<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

well structured project team, with a clearly def<strong>in</strong>ed escalation path to the hospital<br />

leadership, is essential. Despite challenges, frustrations, and at times, setbacks,<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g focused on priorities and guid<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciples can lead to success.<br />
