Bright Futures is an AAP national health care promotion and disease prevention<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiative funded by the <strong>Health</strong> Resources and Services Adm<strong>in</strong>istration’s<br />

(HRSA) Maternal and <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Bureau (MCHB) ‘that “uses a developmentally<br />

based approach to address children’s health needs <strong>in</strong> the context of<br />

family and community, structured <strong>in</strong> the form of the Bright Futures Toolkit, “an<br />

essential compendium of parent questionnaires, fact sheets, screen<strong>in</strong>g tools and<br />

other pediatric health supervision materials.” ’<br />

The mission of the AAFP is to improve the health of patients, families, and communities<br />

by serv<strong>in</strong>g the needs of its members with professionalism and creativity.<br />

The AAFP hosts a Center for <strong>Health</strong> Information Technology that is very active<br />

<strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for electronic record adoption among family<br />

practitioners.<br />

The American Medical <strong>Informatics</strong> Association (AMIA): http://www.amia.org<br />

AMIA is a 30 year old organization that is “the professional home for biomedical<br />

and health <strong>in</strong>formatics dedicated to promot<strong>in</strong>g the effective organization, analysis,<br />

management, and use of <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> health care <strong>in</strong> support of patient care, public<br />

health, teach<strong>in</strong>g, research, adm<strong>in</strong>istration, and related policy. AMIA members<br />

encompass an <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary and diverse group of <strong>in</strong>dividuals and organizations<br />

that represent over 65 countries.” It publishes the Journal of the American Medical<br />

<strong>Informatics</strong> Association (JAMIA) and hosts a widely attended Annual Symposium.<br />

Its current work <strong>in</strong>cludes an effort to <strong>in</strong>crease cl<strong>in</strong>ician education of <strong>in</strong>formatics and<br />

to ga<strong>in</strong> recognition of cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>in</strong>formatics as a medical specialty.<br />
