The Women’s Initiatives for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> Justice is an internati<strong>on</strong>al women’s human rights<br />

organisati<strong>on</strong> that advocates for gender justice through <strong>the</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>Criminal</strong> Court<br />

(ICC) and works with women most affected by <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>flict situati<strong>on</strong>s under investigati<strong>on</strong><br />

by <strong>the</strong> ICC.<br />

Currently <strong>the</strong> Women’s Initiatives for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> Justice has country-based programmes in six<br />

ICC Situati<strong>on</strong> countries: Uganda, <strong>the</strong> Democratic Republic of <strong>the</strong> C<strong>on</strong>go, Sudan, <strong>the</strong> Central<br />

African Republic, Kenya and Libya. The organisati<strong>on</strong> has also initiated a violence against<br />

women advocacy project in Kyrgyzstan.<br />

The strategic programme areas for <strong>the</strong> Women’s Initiatives include:<br />

n Political and legal advocacy for accountability and prosecuti<strong>on</strong> of gender-based crimes<br />

n Capacity and movement building initiatives with women in armed c<strong>on</strong>flicts<br />

n C<strong>on</strong>flict resoluti<strong>on</strong> and integrati<strong>on</strong> of gender issues within <strong>the</strong> negotiati<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

implementati<strong>on</strong> of Peace Agreements (Uganda, DRC, Darfur)<br />

n Documentati<strong>on</strong> of gender-based crimes in armed c<strong>on</strong>flicts<br />

n Victims’ participati<strong>on</strong> before <strong>the</strong> ICC<br />

n Training of activists, lawyers and judges <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rome Statute and internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

jurisprudence regarding gender-based crimes<br />

n Advocacy for reparati<strong>on</strong>s for women victims/survivors of armed c<strong>on</strong>flicts<br />

In 2006, <strong>the</strong> Women’s Initiatives for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> Justice was <strong>the</strong> first NGO to file before <strong>the</strong> ICC<br />

and to date is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly internati<strong>on</strong>al women’s human rights organisati<strong>on</strong> to have been<br />

recognised with amicus curiae status by <strong>the</strong> Court.<br />
