Trial Proceedings<br />
case testified in February 2011. 1314 These two<br />
participating victims do not appear to have<br />
testified about sexual violence in open court.<br />
The first witness for <strong>the</strong> Katanga Defence, <strong>the</strong><br />
accused’s younger bro<strong>the</strong>r, testified <strong>on</strong> 24 March<br />
2011. 1315 Significantly, three of <strong>the</strong> Katanga<br />
Defence witnesses have sought asylum in <strong>the</strong><br />
Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands, as detailed in <strong>the</strong> Protecti<strong>on</strong><br />
secti<strong>on</strong> of this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The Katanga Defence<br />
called its final witness <strong>on</strong> 12 July 2011; <strong>the</strong><br />
Ngudjolo Defence commenced its defence <strong>on</strong> 15<br />
August 2011. Both of <strong>the</strong> accused are testifying<br />
<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own behalf during <strong>the</strong> proceedings.<br />
After having requested translati<strong>on</strong> into Lingala<br />
due to his inability to follow <strong>the</strong> proceedings in<br />
French, starting <strong>on</strong> 27 September 2011, Germain<br />
Katanga testified in French, resulting in <strong>the</strong><br />
Chamber’s order to <strong>the</strong> Registry to cease Lingala<br />
translati<strong>on</strong>. 1316 Katanga’s testim<strong>on</strong>y, as of <strong>the</strong><br />
writing of this <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g>, is summarised below.<br />
Ngudjolo is scheduled to testify in late October<br />
2011.<br />
Witness testim<strong>on</strong>y <strong>on</strong><br />
sexual violence<br />
Because <strong>the</strong> majority of Prosecuti<strong>on</strong> witnesses<br />
who testified about sexual violence did so during<br />
<strong>the</strong> period covered by <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Card</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
2010, 1317 <strong>the</strong> descripti<strong>on</strong> of witness testim<strong>on</strong>y<br />
<strong>on</strong> sexual violence covered by this year’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Card</str<strong>on</strong>g> is necessarily limited. Over <strong>the</strong><br />
course of <strong>the</strong> Prosecuti<strong>on</strong> case in 2010, three<br />
female witnesses testified <strong>on</strong> sexual violence. 1318<br />
Two of <strong>the</strong>m testified about having been raped<br />
by several soldiers and <strong>on</strong> several occasi<strong>on</strong>s;<br />
<strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong>m stated that some of <strong>the</strong> soldiers<br />
subsequently told her that she was now <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
wife. One of <strong>the</strong> witnesses was brought to and<br />
kept in a camp pris<strong>on</strong> where she was regularly<br />
raped by multiple perpetrators, and was later<br />
forced into marriage with a man who came to<br />
<strong>the</strong> camp to rape her. Apart from <strong>the</strong> testim<strong>on</strong>y<br />
of female witnesses, a number of male witnesses<br />
for <strong>the</strong> Prosecuti<strong>on</strong> also testified about <strong>the</strong><br />
multiple roles women and girls played during<br />
<strong>the</strong> attack. Two male witnesses testified about<br />
rape in general terms. A more detailed summary<br />
of <strong>the</strong>se witnesses’ testim<strong>on</strong>ies is available in <strong>the</strong><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Card</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2010. 1319<br />
Although <strong>the</strong> testim<strong>on</strong>y of Prosecuti<strong>on</strong> witnesses<br />
covered by this year’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Report</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Card</str<strong>on</strong>g> centred<br />
primarily <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> use of child soldiers, and not<br />
specifically <strong>on</strong> sexual violence, several witnesses<br />
of both <strong>the</strong> Prosecuti<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Defence did<br />
provide testim<strong>on</strong>y related to gender-based<br />
crimes. 1320 A number of male witnesses for<br />
<strong>the</strong> Prosecuti<strong>on</strong> testified that women were<br />
abducted, taken hostage, used as sexual slaves<br />
and forced into marriage. Witness 12 testified<br />
that women were abducted and taken to Zumbe<br />
