Registry<br />

Staff of <strong>the</strong> Victims Participati<strong>on</strong> and Reparati<strong>on</strong><br />

Secti<strong>on</strong> (VPRS) participated in four genderrelated<br />

meetings between 6 July 2010 and 9<br />

September 2011, of which two were in Kenya,<br />

<strong>on</strong>e was in Uganda and <strong>on</strong>e was in The Hague.<br />

Informati<strong>on</strong> regarding <strong>the</strong> extent and nature<br />

of <strong>the</strong> training, <strong>the</strong> number of VPRS staff who<br />

attended and <strong>the</strong> specific gender focus of <strong>the</strong><br />

training was not provided and as such it is<br />

unclear whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>se were meetings intended<br />

to support and build <strong>the</strong> capacity building of<br />

VPRS staff regarding gender issues.<br />

On 26-27 May 2011, a Psychologist from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Victims and Witness Unit delivered a<br />

presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Challenges in developing<br />

gender-sensitive witness and victim protecti<strong>on</strong><br />

in proceedings and programs’ at <strong>the</strong> ‘Expert<br />

meeting <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> and Witness and Victim<br />

Protecti<strong>on</strong>’ organised by <strong>the</strong> Office of <strong>the</strong> United<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>s High Commissi<strong>on</strong>er for Human Rights<br />

(UNHCHR). She also participated in detailed<br />

discussi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> gender-specific challenges<br />

regarding protecti<strong>on</strong> issues.<br />

No fur<strong>the</strong>r informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> gender training<br />

within <strong>the</strong> Registry was made available to <strong>the</strong><br />

Women’s Initiatives for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> Justice.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> OTP provided a list of meetings to<br />

which staff gave presentati<strong>on</strong>s or speeches, no<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> was provided about <strong>the</strong> gender<br />

training workshops and courses attended by OTP<br />

staff for <strong>the</strong> purpose of developing <strong>the</strong>ir capacity<br />

in this area.<br />

According to informati<strong>on</strong> provided by <strong>the</strong> OTP,<br />

between September 2010 and June 2011, OTP<br />

staff participated in and gave presentati<strong>on</strong>s at <strong>the</strong><br />

senior staff member attended a ‘Precarious<br />

Progress: UN Resoluti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> Women, Peace and<br />

Security’ working c<strong>on</strong>ference organised by <strong>the</strong><br />

Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ) at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University of San Diego and co-c<strong>on</strong>vened<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al Acti<strong>on</strong> Network <strong>on</strong> Small<br />

Arms (IANSA), <strong>the</strong> NGO Working Group <strong>on</strong><br />

Women, Peace and Security, <strong>the</strong> United Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Women's Initiatives for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Gender</str<strong>on</strong>g> Justice in<br />

San Diego, US;<br />

On 13-15 October 2010, OTP staff gave a<br />

presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> ‘Sexual Violence in <strong>the</strong> DRC’ at<br />

<strong>the</strong> 3rd annual 'Marche M<strong>on</strong>diale des Femmes’<br />

in Bukavu, DRC;<br />

On 15-16 October 2010, a staff member<br />

attended a ‘Proving Internati<strong>on</strong>al Sex Crimes’<br />

internati<strong>on</strong>al expert seminar co-organised<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Forum for Internati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>Criminal</strong> and<br />

Humanitarian Law, Yale University and <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Cape Town in New Haven, US;<br />
