Austria: The Austrian label for the environment<br />

The Austrian label for the environment <strong>is</strong> awarded to environmentally-conscious<br />

hotels, guest houses, camp grounds and alpine huts. The criteria range from the<br />

economic use of energy and water to the purchase of regionally produced food and<br />

the use of low-polluting colours and varn<strong>is</strong>hes. The label for the environment <strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>is</strong>sued by the Austrian federal government and <strong>is</strong> technically developed by the<br />

Association for Consumer Information (VKI). Certified tour<strong>is</strong>m operations are<br />

reviewed once every year for the compliance with the criteria by independent, stateapproved<br />

auditors.<br />

Switzerland: Capricorn label<br />

The Capricorn label <strong>is</strong> a Sw<strong>is</strong>s quality label for sustainability in the hotel industry. It <strong>is</strong><br />

awarded to accommodation facilities which are d<strong>is</strong>playing an above average effort in<br />

their responsibilities for sustainable economic activities in the five sectors<br />

management, economic efficiency, environment, employees and social affairs as well<br />

as regional creation of value and culture. The capricorn as symbol for nature and<br />

natural identity stands for sustainability in the accommodation industry and tour<strong>is</strong>m<br />

with the label bearing its name. Beyond stars and scores, the Capricorn label has<br />

developed into a Sw<strong>is</strong>s quality label used to award any type of accommodation<br />

facilities, ranging from 5-star hotels to youth hostels and eco pioneers with 1 to 5<br />

capricorns, depending on their sustainability performance.<br />

The following categories of every operation are reviewed: Environment, social affairs,<br />

regional foothold and culture, economic efficiency and management.<br />
