1.2. Definitions and concept classifications in the field of <strong>CSR</strong><br />

In short<br />

In the corporate practice as well as in scientific and sociopolitical d<strong>is</strong>courses,<br />

voluntary corporate responsibility and commitment are addressed under<br />

different terms. The most commonly used terms are <strong>Corporate</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />

<strong>Responsibility</strong> (<strong>CSR</strong>), <strong>Corporate</strong> <strong>Responsibility</strong> (CR) and <strong>Corporate</strong> Citizenship<br />

(CC).<br />

<strong>Corporate</strong> social responsibility <strong>is</strong> increasingly d<strong>is</strong>tributed and further developed<br />

throughout the world under various concepts and names such as especially<br />

<strong>Corporate</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Responsibility</strong> (<strong>CSR</strong>), <strong>Corporate</strong> Citizenship (CC) and <strong>Corporate</strong><br />

<strong>Responsibility</strong> (CR). Because no globally uniform definition of corporate social<br />

responsibility ex<strong>is</strong>ts, the concepts relating to the topic are h<strong>is</strong>torically and culturally<br />

influenced both in the corporate practice as well as in the scientific and political<br />

environment and vary depending on the respective regional or national<br />

understanding, legal framework conditions and corporate focus.<br />

The idea of corporate social responsibility and civil commitment <strong>is</strong> mainly based on<br />

liberal market economies with relatively few welfare state institutions. In contrast,<br />

state-run, collective bargaining or corporate structures result in a different<br />

understanding of corporate responsibility and civil commitment in social market<br />

economies or welfare states such as they are predominant in Europe.<br />

The following definitions of <strong>CSR</strong>, CR and CC have been collected from the glossary<br />

relating to corporate responsibility <strong>is</strong>sued by the <strong>CSR</strong> forum of the German Federal<br />

Government and illustrate the differences and overlaps in the conceptual<br />

classifications:<br />
