In one of the largest surveys on sustainability conducted among top<br />

executives, the CEOs (Chief Executive Officers) believe that a turning point<br />

might be achieved within a decade, in which sustainability will be interlocked<br />

completely with the core business of the company - with its processes,<br />

systems and capabilities as well as the entire global supply and value chain<br />

and the subsidiaries.<br />

In spite of the latest economic cr<strong>is</strong><strong>is</strong>, 93% of CEOs of leading global companies<br />

surveyed in 2010 believe that sustainability <strong>is</strong> crucial for the future success of their<br />

own company.<br />

The study conducted with 766 CEOs from the circle of member companies of UN<br />

Global Compact reflects the assessment that the global economic downturn <strong>is</strong> not in<br />

the least bit impairing the sustainability commitment of their company. Because 80%<br />

of surveyed managers state that it was in fact the recession that boosted the<br />

meaning of sustainability as management topic. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> how their companies<br />

addressed the challenges associated with the financial cr<strong>is</strong><strong>is</strong>, whereby sustainability<br />

<strong>is</strong> perceived as a resource for cost savings and sales increases. In addition, many<br />

companies consider sustainability a critical element for growth in new markets.<br />

88% of CEOs believe that they should be integrating sustainability into the<br />

companies via supply chain, while 54 % indicate that th<strong>is</strong> has already been real<strong>is</strong>ed<br />

in their companies.<br />

As well, consumer trust <strong>is</strong> considered one of the main tasks: For almost three<br />

quarters (72%) of CEOs, the value increase of brands as well as the development<br />

and conservation of the reputation and trust are the greatest motivation for dealing<br />

with the topic of sustainability.<br />
