The guiding principles of the Organ<strong>is</strong>ation for Economic Co-operation and<br />

Development (OECD) for multinational companies are a set of rules for the socially<br />

responsible and environmentally conscious corporate management. The OECD<br />

principles were last updated in 2000 and contain recommendations for the following<br />

main areas of responsibilities of companies:<br />

� Basic duties of companies (sustainable development, compliance with human<br />

rights, promotion of local capacities)<br />

� Information policies (<strong>is</strong>suing of a business report, d<strong>is</strong>closure of information<br />

about socially and environmentally relevant questions)<br />

� Employment policies (compliance with the core labour standards of the<br />

International Labour Organ<strong>is</strong>ation)<br />

� Environmental policies (set up of environmental management systems and<br />

ensurance of transparent environmental reporting, orientation on the<br />

precautionary principle)<br />

� Combating corruption (rejection of bribes, transparency about the measures<br />

used to combat corruption)<br />

� Consumer interests (ensurance of fair business, marketing and advert<strong>is</strong>ing<br />

practices as well as safety and quality of the goods and services)<br />

� Research and technology (protection of intellectual property, know-how<br />

transfer)<br />

� Competition (observance of the rules of fair competition, renunciation of the<br />

set up of anticompetitive cartels)<br />

� Taxation (contributing to the public finances of the host countries, compliance<br />

with tax laws)<br />
