7.2. Praktiker Hungary – Video: <strong>CSR</strong> in the market<br />

In short<br />

Praktiker Magyarország Kft. <strong>is</strong> the Hungarian subsidiary of Praktiker Bau- und<br />

Heimwerkermärkte Holding AG domiciled in Germany. The holding belongs to<br />

the leading building centres in Europe and <strong>is</strong> part of the METRO Group. The<br />

full-range supplier Praktiker sells a broad range of goods relating to<br />

construction, renovation, workshop, living, garden and le<strong>is</strong>ure. Currently,<br />

Praktiker <strong>is</strong> represented with more than 440 building centres in ten countries.<br />

In 2009, it generated a turnover of approximately 3.7 billion Euros with its close<br />

to 27‘000 employees. The first Praktiker building centre in Hungary was opened<br />

in 1998. On the occasion of its 10 year anniversary on the Hungarian market,<br />

Praktiker Hungary has started to implement <strong>Corporate</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Responsibility</strong><br />

(<strong>CSR</strong>) in all its building centres throughout the country.<br />

<strong>CSR</strong> in the company<br />

Only a few pioneers are spearheading the strategic approach of <strong>Corporate</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />

<strong>Responsibility</strong> (<strong>CSR</strong>) on the Hungarian market. The majority of them are large<br />

enterpr<strong>is</strong>es. Praktiker Hungary has included <strong>CSR</strong> in the corporate management<br />

agenda for the first time in 2008 on the occasion of its 10 year anniversary on the<br />

Hungarian market. At the time, Karl-Heinz Keth, managing director of Praktiker<br />

Hungary asked himself what the corporate benefits of the 10 year success of the<br />

company in the market meant for the country in which h<strong>is</strong> enterpr<strong>is</strong>e <strong>is</strong> making profits.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> was the starting point for <strong>CSR</strong> in the core business, in particular by integrating<br />

the employees (<strong>Corporate</strong> Volunteering) and corporate locations (Community<br />

Involvement).<br />

In addition, Praktiker Hungary hopes to consider the special character<strong>is</strong>tics of the<br />

Hungarian market for <strong>CSR</strong> activities and have the corporate headquarters<br />

consciously use the generated scope for development. Accordingly, impulses for<br />

<strong>CSR</strong> activities can also be provided by employees and store managers at the<br />

respective locations in addition to the Hungarian management.<br />
