The Saker falcon declined in Europe as a result of
persecution, nest robbing and habitat loss due to
land-use change, and the current distribution of
the depleted populations is fragmented. Saker
falcons have benefitted from intensive conservation
efforts, and as a direct result the species
is increasing in the Carpathian Basin. Legal
protection, nest guarding, provisioning of artificial
nests, insulation of power lines, raising public
awareness, stakeholder dialogue (involvement
in active conservation) and habitat management
(e.g. agri-environment measures) to promote the
key prey species have all contributed to ongoing
recovery in the region. To secure the species’ status
in Europe, such measures must be extended across
the species’ distribution.
