The Saker falcon decl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Europe as a result of<br />

persecution, nest robb<strong>in</strong>g and habitat loss due to<br />

land-use change, and the current distribution of<br />

the depleted populations is fragmented. Saker<br />

falcons have benefitted from <strong>in</strong>tensive conservation<br />

efforts, and as a direct result the species<br />

is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Carpathian Bas<strong>in</strong>. Legal<br />

protection, nest guard<strong>in</strong>g, provision<strong>in</strong>g of artificial<br />

nests, <strong>in</strong>sulation of power l<strong>in</strong>es, rais<strong>in</strong>g public<br />

awareness, stakeholder dialogue (<strong>in</strong>volvement<br />

<strong>in</strong> active conservation) and habitat management<br />

(e.g. agri-environment measures) to promote the<br />

key prey species have all contributed to ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

recovery <strong>in</strong> the region. To secure the species’ status<br />

<strong>in</strong> Europe, such measures must be extended across<br />

the species’ distribution.<br />
