The Bearded vulture is a specialised scavenger<br />

which <strong>in</strong>habits mounta<strong>in</strong> areas <strong>in</strong> southern<br />

Europe. The species was widespread across most<br />

Eurasian mounta<strong>in</strong> ranges until the 19 th century,<br />

when direct persecution and the use of poison<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>wildlife</strong> led to its disappearance from<br />

most of its former distribution range. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

most of the last century, with<strong>in</strong> western and<br />

southern Europe, Bearded vultures survived only<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Pyrenees and on two Mediterranean islands<br />

(Corsica and Crete). At the end of the 20 th century,<br />

the Pyrenean population started to <strong>in</strong>crease.<br />

Re<strong>in</strong>troduction projects are ongo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Alps,<br />

the Grands Causses (Cevennes) and the mounta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

of Andalucía, with others to northern Spa<strong>in</strong> and<br />

central France planned <strong>in</strong> the com<strong>in</strong>g decade.<br />

Captive bred birds released <strong>in</strong> the Alps have<br />

led to the reestablishment of a wild population<br />
