They sent me home. It was morning and I stood in the
lobby waiting. I wanted a cigarette. I wanted to feel the wind on my
face. In just a few minutes, I’d be out. No one could stop me. So I
stood at the door and I waited. My fingertips scrubbed at the seam
of my jeans.
Nurses and techs, other people, the crazy people wandered
around. No Gid.
Maybe he’s gone, I thought.
I wanted to be back to a normal life. I wanted to be the
normal crazy girl. I wanted to be alone in my head.
Through the window in the door, I saw Tayla. She waved
and when she came in, I rushed into her arms.
“Ready?” Tayla asked.
We gathered my things and we went down the hall to the
elevator. The closer we got to the parking lot, the more I wanted a
cigarette. As soon as we cleared the doors, I lit up.
We walked to the car. Ash filled my lungs. Tayla watched
me, measuring my madness. She watched but said nothing.
We drove passed trees, glass buildings and cars. We held
hands.
“Are you ready for this?” she asked.
I nodded. I was. I was ready for anything.
