Telling Secrets
Miss Tris sat with me. We had last period off. Tayla had
calc and Tad had bio, but Miss Tris signed up for study hall to be
with me.
“Tell me about him,” she said.
A small pit opened in my belly. I tried not to fall into it.
“Do you believe in angels?” I asked.
She looked out at the cars on the street. A cop slowed for a
moment, eyeballing us, before moving on. Technically, we were
skipping but as long as we weren’t making trouble, no one cared.
“Angels?” Miss Tris asked.
I nodded. She tried hard not to look away.
“Like God’s angels?” she asked.
I shrugged.
“There’s this guy,” I said.
“A guy?”
Her voice was too even, too smooth.
“Never mind,” I said.
Her hand took mine. She squeezed my fingers and waited.
Waiting was a thing with us. Everyone waited. They waited to see
what would come next. They waited to see what to do.
“It’s so real,” I said.
“But it’s not,” she said. “Not really.”
“It feels real.”
“That’s all that matters,” she said.
Scooting in close, she wrapped an arm around me. It was
nice. It was solid.
“Be careful,” she said.
I nodded.
“I mean it,” she said.
“I know.”
“Good.”
