What is it<br />

Eighty-two stone stelae, dating from <strong>the</strong> 15th to <strong>the</strong><br />

18th centuries, at <strong>the</strong> Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam historical<br />

site. They record <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> doctoral laureates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

royal examinations at The Temple <strong>of</strong> Confucius, <strong>the</strong><br />

National University.<br />

Why was it inscribed<br />

The stelae are a monument to <strong>the</strong> influence and<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> Confucianism in Vietnamese royalty,<br />

government and society, especially from <strong>the</strong> 15th to<br />

<strong>the</strong> 18th centuries. They are also works <strong>of</strong> art in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own right.<br />
