Stone stele records of royal examinations of the Le and Mac dynasties (1442–1779) Inscribed 2011 What is it Eighty-two stone stelae, dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries, at the Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam historical site. They record the names of doctoral laureates of the royal examinations at The Temple of Confucius, the National University. Why was it inscribed The stelae are a monument to the influence and importance of Confucianism in Vietnamese royalty, government and society, especially from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Where is it Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam Scientific and Cultural Activities Center, Hanoi, Vietnam Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam, where the stelae are located, was established as a place of learning in the 11th century and dedicated to the philosopher Confucius (551–479 BC) and A 19th-century engraving of the Temple of Confucius in Hanoi .� Confucian education; it also functioned as the first national university of Vietnam. Confucianism was adopted by the Vietnamese royal dynasties who made it the foundation for building the state and governing the country. Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam trained administrators and bureaucrats, or mandarins, for work in government. Through the centuries, the 139
