The special language and poetic quality of the fairytale
text was a particular factor in their success. Wilhelm
Grimm edited and re-edited from one edition to the next,
heightening the stories’ romantic, stylized narrative tone;
this too endures to the present day as the definitive style
for fairy-tale narration.
Several parts of the Grimms’ archive are listed on the
Register. Their own Kassel Handexemplare (annotated
reference copies) are the authoritative sources for the work,
especially for the first two editions in 1812–15 and 1819–22.
These comprise handwritten notes, commentaries and
lengthier supplements for 201 fairy tales and ten children’s
legends. Also listed is the Ölenberger Märchenhandschrift
or Ölenberg Fairy Tale Manuscript with around sixty texts
which they prepared in 1810 for a friend, and around
thirty individual fairy-tale manuscripts and other source
documents, some of which are fragments.
