year 1803’, a peace which was short-lived.
beginning of the 19th century, and are linked directly to
events of great historical significance: the independence
of the United States of America and the decisive Franco-
Spanish participation in the conflict; the political life
of Tsarist Russia in the era of the Empress Catherine
the Great; the French Revolution and wars to defend
it; and, last but not least, the initial struggle towards
independence in the Spanish American colonies. He
kept a wide variety of documents and records which
illustrated his efforts to attract world attention to his
cause of independence for Spanish America from
Spain. He organized and saved personal and official
letters, complete judicial records, notes, and even
revolutionary and military music scores (including an
original score of the Marseillaise) which today constitute
a fundamental primary source to understanding these
processes of world importance.
