These unique archives attest to <strong>the</strong> efforts <strong>of</strong> diplomats,<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficials and <strong>the</strong> first international civil servants to promote<br />

cooperation between nations and guarantee peace and<br />

security. The subjects and <strong>the</strong>mes portrayed in <strong>the</strong> archives<br />

include collective security, peaceful settlement <strong>of</strong> disputes<br />

through conciliation, arbitration and adjudication,<br />

disarmament, minorities in Europe and <strong>the</strong> Near East,<br />

supervising mandates over colonies and o<strong>the</strong>r territories<br />

and <strong>the</strong> beginnings <strong>of</strong> a project for <strong>the</strong> European Union.<br />

In addition, <strong>the</strong> League dealt with refugees, health,<br />

social issues, such as slavery, drug control and traffic<br />

in women and children, intellectual cooperation and<br />

world economy and trade, including financial assistance<br />

to member states. They give us an insight into <strong>the</strong> first<br />

experiment <strong>of</strong> collective security and have already provided<br />

its successor organization, <strong>the</strong> United Nations, with<br />

lessons learned.<br />

Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland is <strong>the</strong> former<br />

headquarters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> League <strong>of</strong> Nations,<br />

and is now used by <strong>the</strong> United Nations. �<br />
