Memory of the World; 2012 - unesdoc - Unesco

These unique archives attest to the efforts of diplomats,
officials and the first international civil servants to promote
cooperation between nations and guarantee peace and
security. The subjects and themes portrayed in the archives
include collective security, peaceful settlement of disputes
through conciliation, arbitration and adjudication,
disarmament, minorities in Europe and the Near East,
supervising mandates over colonies and other territories
and the beginnings of a project for the European Union.
In addition, the League dealt with refugees, health,
social issues, such as slavery, drug control and traffic
in women and children, intellectual cooperation and
world economy and trade, including financial assistance
to member states. They give us an insight into the first
experiment of collective security and have already provided
its successor organization, the United Nations, with
lessons learned.
Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland is the former
headquarters of the League of Nations,
and is now used by the United Nations. �
