What are they
The fifteen selected documents are a chronological
selection – from 1961 to 1990 – of television news items,
TV and film documentaries, photographs and official
documents, all focused on the Berlin Wall.
Why were they inscribed
The documents are fundamental and unique records
of the political heritage and the collective memory
of Germany, Europe and the world from 1961 until
the end of the Cold War.
Where are they
Various archives in Berlin, Potsdam, Kleinmachnow
and Hamburg, Germany
Hopes for a free, democratic Europe after the victory of the
anti-Hitler coalition over Nazi Germany were not fulfilled.
On the territories conquered by its army, the Soviet Union
established communist dictatorships. The East–West
� The Two-plus-Four Treaty of 12 September 1990, which brought
to a close the division of Germany. The pages shown are the title
page and the signatures of the four powers.

US President John F. Kennedy speaking in front of Berlin
Schöneberg town hall on 26 June 1963, where he uttered his famous
message of hope for West Berliners who lived in fear of a possible
East German occupation. A film of the speech is one of the key
documents inscribed. �
On 9 November 1989 people from East and West Berlin
climbed on to the Wall at the Brandenburg Gate, bringing
the division of the city to a dramatic end. �
