What are <strong>the</strong>y<br />

The fifteen selected documents are a chronological<br />

selection – from 1961 to 1990 – <strong>of</strong> television news items,<br />

TV and film documentaries, photographs and <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

documents, all focused on <strong>the</strong> Berlin Wall.<br />

Why were <strong>the</strong>y inscribed<br />

The documents are fundamental and unique records<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> political heritage and <strong>the</strong> collective memory<br />

<strong>of</strong> Germany, Europe and <strong>the</strong> world from 1961 until<br />

<strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cold War.<br />

Where are <strong>the</strong>y<br />

Various archives in Berlin, Potsdam, Kleinmachnow<br />

and Hamburg, Germany<br />

Hopes for a free, democratic Europe after <strong>the</strong> victory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

anti-Hitler coalition over Nazi Germany were not fulfilled.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> territories conquered by its army, <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union<br />

established communist dictatorships. The East–West<br />

� The Two-plus-Four Treaty <strong>of</strong> 12 September 1990, which brought<br />

to a close <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> Germany. The pages shown are <strong>the</strong> title<br />

page and <strong>the</strong> signatures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> four powers.<br />

US President John F. Kennedy speaking in front <strong>of</strong> Berlin<br />

Schöneberg town hall on 26 June 1963, where he uttered his famous<br />

message <strong>of</strong> hope for West Berliners who lived in fear <strong>of</strong> a possible<br />

East German occupation. A film <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> speech is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key<br />

documents inscribed. �<br />

On 9 November 1989 people from East and West Berlin<br />

climbed on to <strong>the</strong> Wall at <strong>the</strong> Brandenburg Gate, bringing<br />

<strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city to a dramatic end. �
