The masterpieces of Fryderyk Chopin Inscribed 1999 What is it A collection of original musical autographs, copies of Chopin’s works, letters and notebooks. Why was it inscribed Chopin’s originality, uniqueness and worldwide popularity make him one of the world’s most prominent and influential musicians, and this collection is a unique archive of his works. Where is it National Library, Warsaw, Poland Fryderyk Chopin (1810–49) was a composer and virtuoso pianist of French-Polish parentage. He is considered one of the great masters of Romantic music and is often grouped with Bach, Mozart and Beethoven as an original composer of universal influence. Chopin’s works had a huge influence in 19th-century music and Romanticism still plays an important part in modern culture. Romanticism in music is characterized by the use of a large number of instruments, a rich sound and the rejection of rigid rules, as well as by the presence of lyrical, folk and poetic elements. Even though Chopin helped create the Romantic movement, his music had a very individual character that is distinct form his predecessors and followers. In his compositions Chopin combined elements of Polish culture with universal ones in a very sophisticated way, appealing to people from different continents and cultural backgrounds. Beyond Europe, he also made a name for himself in Asia (especially in Japan and Korea) and in both Americas. The Chopin Museum of the Fryderyk Chopin Society in Warsaw (known until 1950 as the Fryderyk Chopin Institute) began collecting Chopin’s autographs in 1935. The first thirty-page set of his writings was bought from Ludwika Ciechomska, the great-granddaughter of the composer’s sister Ludwika Jldrzejewska. The autography included a trio in G minor opus 8, and together with the other 127 original writings, it constitutes a priceless collection. 314 The masterpieces of Fryderyk Chopin More autographs soon followed until, when the Second World War broke out, the collection was moved to Canada. It was returned to the National Library in Poland in 1959. The Fryderyk Chopin Institute once again began gathering autographs written by Chopin; this was not an easy task as he had lived outside Poland for almost 19 years. However, between 1953 and 1967 the Fryderyk Chopin Society received as gifts, borrowed or bought a total of forty items. Forty-six autographs of Fryderyk Chopin were bought with the museum’s own financial resources in the years from 1955 to 1992. The biggest collection of Chopin’s
original writings (seventeen items in all) was bequeathed to the Fryderyk Chopin Society by Arthur Rubinstein in 1977. The works of Fryderyk Chopin now comprise autographs, authorized copies of his works, letters, notes and corrections written on works, notebooks, details of his piano method and congratulatory scrolls.
