During the Cultural Revolution in China – when the
Communist leader Chairman Mao and his supporters
attempted to ‘cleanse’ China of all expressions of its
cultural history – the archive was safeguarded by members
of the Institute staff. However, political and economic
modernization is now taking a toll where cultural
repression failed and traditional music forms in China,
as in so many countries, are coming under pressure.
The Institute continues to collect, record, classify, store
and reserve the traditional music of the country for
present and future generations.
