map collection shows the extent of exploration and
settlement throughout the continent. There are also files
of correspondence with famous and notable people, such
as popes, French kings and ministers and the founders
of New France.
This collection bears witness to the European powers’
Age of Discovery and particularly to the colonization
of the New World and the continual growth of spiritual,
societal and commercial exchanges between Europe
and North America.
The documents show a vast range of the conceivable
elements of colonization and the building of a new society.
