Besides daily records, there are such diverse items as
medical journals, ships’ logs, census records, scientific
data, vocabularies of indigenous languages, records
of hunting practices, advertising art, maps, paintings,
drawings, photographs and audio and film recordings.
The earliest item in the archives is a minute book from
1671 and in total the documents stretch for more than
3000 linear metres.
The company is still in existence, most prominently
now in The Bay department stores, so its archives remain
open. However, the records of its first 300 years were
transferred from London to Canada in 1974 and gifted
to Manitoba in 1994.
