RALP thus illustrates <strong>the</strong> genesis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> globalization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

silver trade in <strong>the</strong> 16th and 17th centuries.<br />

The archives from RALP deal with economic, military,<br />

ecclesiastical, cultural and social issues within its huge<br />

territorial and administrative jurisdiction.<br />

The documents relate, among o<strong>the</strong>r things <strong>the</strong> legal system<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indies and <strong>the</strong> supplementary application <strong>of</strong> Castilian<br />

<strong>of</strong> European goods; <strong>the</strong> transformation <strong>of</strong> monetary wealth<br />

into commercial capital; <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>of</strong> capital to commerce<br />

and agriculture; <strong>the</strong> adoption <strong>of</strong> indigenous technological<br />

knowledge; <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> new mining technology;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> adaptation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> indigenous obligatory system<br />

<strong>of</strong> labour, <strong>the</strong> mita, to capital accumulation. Also illustrated<br />

are <strong>the</strong> transformation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pre-European tribute to <strong>the</strong><br />

Inca and local deities into a ti<strong>the</strong> system established by <strong>the</strong><br />

European conquerors; <strong>the</strong> responsibilities and privileges<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Inca aristocracy as regards <strong>the</strong> functioning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mita<br />

system; <strong>the</strong> application and later decline <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> obligatory<br />

paid-work regime in <strong>the</strong> mines; <strong>the</strong> labour <strong>of</strong> African slaves<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Royal Mint House; <strong>the</strong> establishments <strong>of</strong> networks<br />

for <strong>the</strong> circulation, interchange and consumption <strong>of</strong> goods<br />

among regions; <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> mining, commercial and<br />

industrial societies; <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> transport networks<br />

employing Andean animals such as <strong>the</strong> llama and <strong>the</strong> alpaca;<br />

norms for <strong>the</strong> acquisition, exploitation and sale <strong>of</strong> mining<br />

properties; technological limitations for refining complex<br />

silver ores containing o<strong>the</strong>r metals and non-metals; <strong>the</strong> role<br />

in development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local economic, political, social and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r trends in <strong>the</strong> entire jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RALP.<br />

This documentation is <strong>of</strong> huge relevance to <strong>the</strong> presentday<br />

territories <strong>of</strong> Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Peru,<br />

as well as Bolivia. It also provides a fascinating historical<br />

account <strong>of</strong> crucial factors in <strong>the</strong> development and funding<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spanish empire.<br />
