It led to more than twenty such films being produced in
the silent era with more still being made up to the present.
More unusually, it also created censorship problems, as
its heroic and glamourized images of the bushrangers led
to concerns for law and order and resulted in government
bans on both this film and other, later films with a
bushranging theme. Internationally, the Western theme
and the emergence of many gang-based genres at that
time reflect a similar thematic approach.
It was thought that The Story of the Kelly Gang, like so
many other productions on cellulose nitrate, had been lost.
However, from the 1970s onwards, fragments of the film
began to turn up, sometimes in odd circumstances – in
a purchased film collection, in a house clearance, on a
rubbish tip in Melbourne and at the National Film and
Television Archive in Britain. Although the film remains
incomplete, almost 17 minutes have been recovered and
digitally restored, comprising around 25 percent of its
estimated original length. Other material from the date
of the film’s release includes its original poster and
promotional booklet.
