Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam, where <strong>the</strong> stelae are located, was<br />

established as a place <strong>of</strong> learning in <strong>the</strong> 11th century and<br />

dedicated to <strong>the</strong> philosopher Confucius (551–479 BC) and<br />

A 19th-century engraving <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Temple <strong>of</strong> Confucius in Hanoi .�<br />

Confucian education; it also functioned as <strong>the</strong> first national<br />

university <strong>of</strong> Vietnam.<br />

Confucianism was adopted by <strong>the</strong> Vietnamese royal<br />

dynasties who made it <strong>the</strong> foundation for building <strong>the</strong><br />

state and governing <strong>the</strong> country. Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam<br />

trained administrators and bureaucrats, or mandarins,<br />

for work in government. Through <strong>the</strong> centuries, <strong>the</strong><br />
