Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam, where the stelae are located, was
established as a place of learning in the 11th century and
dedicated to the philosopher Confucius (551–479 BC) and

university of Vietnam.
Confucianism was adopted by the Vietnamese royal
dynasties who made it the foundation for building the
state and governing the country. Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam
trained administrators and bureaucrats, or mandarins,
