incomplete, the material comprises original sequences
filmed between 1910 and 1912. It is the only known film
documentation of the expedition and one of the earliest
films to have been made in this part of the world.
The achievement was not just a personal one but was
also a national triumph for Norway, historically a nation
of seafarers and explorers. Amundsen’s success boosted
national identity, character and sense of belief in the
nation which had achieved independence from Sweden
only a few years before. Norway has continued at the
forefront of geographical and scientific exploration
of the polar regions.
