<strong>the</strong> army, who retreated to <strong>the</strong> suburbs and <strong>the</strong>n enforced a<br />

complete blockade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, letting nothing in and nobody<br />

out. Within <strong>the</strong> city people tried to continue <strong>the</strong>ir life as<br />

normal and Settlement Committees maintained order and<br />

negotiated with <strong>the</strong> military, in vain. In <strong>the</strong> early hours <strong>of</strong> 27<br />

May <strong>the</strong> troops, now significantly reinforced, re-entered <strong>the</strong><br />

city and swiftly and violently reimposed military control.<br />

During ten days <strong>of</strong> resistance, 165 citizens died in and<br />

around Gwangju, seventy-six people went missing, 3383<br />

were injured, and 1476 were arrested. In addition, 102<br />

people later died due to injuries incurred during <strong>the</strong> siege<br />

and survivors suffered physical and emotional trauma<br />

as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir experiences during <strong>the</strong> uprising.<br />
