the army, who retreated to the suburbs and then enforced a
complete blockade of the city, letting nothing in and nobody
out. Within the city people tried to continue their life as
normal and Settlement Committees maintained order and
negotiated with the military, in vain. In the early hours of 27
May the troops, now significantly reinforced, re-entered the
city and swiftly and violently reimposed military control.
During ten days of resistance, 165 citizens died in and
around Gwangju, seventy-six people went missing, 3383
were injured, and 1476 were arrested. In addition, 102
people later died due to injuries incurred during the siege
and survivors suffered physical and emotional trauma
as a result of their experiences during the uprising.
