� A ship sunk in the canal during the Suez Crisis of 1956 years, suspicious of perceived threats to its maritime supremacy and colonial interests. However, the canal was opened on 17 November 1869 and under the terms of the Convention of Constantinople in 1888, it was officially open to vessels of any nation without discrimination, in peace and war, under British protection. The British occupied Egypt from 1882 onwards and maintained joint control with Egypt over the Suez Canal Zone (the canal and its surrounding areas), nominally until 1961. However, President Nasser of Egypt nationalized the canal in 1956, taking it into full Egyptian ownership and precipitating what became known as the Suez Crisis, which involved not only Egypt but the major political and military powers of the day – the USA, the USSR (Soviet Union), Britain, France and Israel. The three smaller powers together invaded Egypt to secure the Canal Zone. 354 Memory of the Suez Canal However, the crisis took place in a tense international atmosphere at the height of the Cold War between the Communist Soviet Union and the West and its outcome had long-term repercussions. Although pressure from the USA forced the three smaller powers into a climb-down, the Soviet Union also threatened to launch nuclear strikes against them – the start of a pattern of sabre-rattling and brinkmanship from the Communist state that led to heightened international tension which continued for several years. Egypt and Israel were drawn in the following decades into two more wars, in which they were supplied by the Soviet Union and the USA in a bloody vicarious Cold War conflict. The freedom of movement of Britain and France, previously major powers, was now exposed as greatly limited without superpower backing.

Currently the canal is being deepened and widened, with improvements to anchorages, to allow a doubling of its capacity. Plans for improvement are continually being updated. 355
