The civil-service-recruitment examination dates back<br />

more than 1300 years and has had international impact,<br />

being copied in Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Ambassadors<br />

to <strong>the</strong> emperor from Europe introduced adaptations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

examination system in several countries in Europe. It has<br />

influenced subsequently civil service systems in many<br />

colonies and successor states.<br />

� The Hall <strong>of</strong> Preserving Harmony in <strong>the</strong> Imperial Palace, Beijing,<br />

where candidates took <strong>the</strong> Palace Examination, <strong>the</strong> final exam<br />

to enter <strong>the</strong> highest level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> civil service. The Golden Lists<br />

recorded all those who passed.<br />
