Memory of the World; 2012 - unesdoc - Unesco

The archives detail their painstaking work through
their documents and records, plans, charts, minutes
of meetings, correspondence, drafts, statistical studies,
contracts, accounts, cost estimates, court decisions,
sketches, site plans, drawings and photographs. From
these documents and plans, the city was reconstructed
successfully – all the more remarkable for being carried
out under another totalitarian occupying power, this time
the Soviet Union (USSR). The rebuilt city later became a
model for the reconstruction of destroyed churches in
Moscow and Kiev and historic buildings in Dresden, and
in 1980, the Old Town district and the Royal Castle were
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
