The archives detail <strong>the</strong>ir painstaking work through<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir documents and records, plans, charts, minutes<br />

<strong>of</strong> meetings, correspondence, drafts, statistical studies,<br />

contracts, accounts, cost estimates, court decisions,<br />

sketches, site plans, drawings and photographs. From<br />

<strong>the</strong>se documents and plans, <strong>the</strong> city was reconstructed<br />

successfully – all <strong>the</strong> more remarkable for being carried<br />

out under ano<strong>the</strong>r totalitarian occupying power, this time<br />

<strong>the</strong> Soviet Union (USSR). The rebuilt city later became a<br />

model for <strong>the</strong> reconstruction <strong>of</strong> destroyed churches in<br />

Moscow and Kiev and historic buildings in Dresden, and<br />

in 1980, <strong>the</strong> Old Town district and <strong>the</strong> Royal Castle were<br />

listed as a UNESCO <strong>World</strong> Heritage site.<br />
