of all of these. Various levels of music theory and practice are
represented: indigenous epics; life-cycle and occupational
songs; sung poetries, debates and other forms of
discourse; semi-court entertainment; pre-Christian and
syncretized or combined rituals; para-liturgies or religious
devotional services outside the recognized liturgy; and
vernacularized romances and other folk expressions.
In addition to the material from the Philippines and
its accompanying notes and images, the collection also
includes studies of several music cultures in the region,
from Indonesia, South China and Malaysia.
Taken as a whole, the collection reflects the expansion
of modern influences to this part of Southeast Asia and
the impact on local and regional styles of a globalized
music industry. Since the recordings were made, many
of these traditional music styles, dance and rituals that
comprise the cultures of the islands have changed or in
some cases, disappeared altogether.
