A Kalahari Family (2002). His films are widely used in the
teaching of anthropology. The collection, which now holds
this material, reflects the evolution of anthropological
research from the study of cultures with little or no
contact with the outside world to those undergoing
transformation due to local and global economic and
political pressures. Because of the long timescale over
which the material was made, it also demonstrates the
evolution of film and video technology and its impact on
visually capturing a culture. The associated audio tapes
are an exceptionally valuable collection for the study of
the endangered !Kung language group containing three
dialects: Ju/’hoansi; San, whose name is now regarded
by the Ju/’hoansi to have negative connotations; and
Bushman, which ironically (given the derogatory history
of this term) is now preferred by the Ju/’hoansi as a term
of dignity.
With the notebooks and photographs in the Bleek
collection at the University of Cape Town (see page 329),
these two archival holdings represent an astonishing
record of Bushman heritage from the mid-19th century
to the end of the 20th century.
