His literature helped Cuban and Latin American culture<br />

to flourish in a period <strong>of</strong> vibrant creativity. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with<br />

<strong>the</strong> praise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great personalities <strong>of</strong> culture, science,<br />

industry and politics, he gives us portraits <strong>of</strong> his time and<br />

an even more penetrating study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social restlessness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> final years <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19th century.<br />

relations <strong>of</strong> his time, Martí’s documents are extremely<br />

valuable. His writings succeed in showing <strong>the</strong> diplomatic,<br />

political and economic manoeuvres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inventors <strong>of</strong> Pan<br />

Americanism – an instrument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> groups <strong>of</strong> power in<br />

<strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America – in <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> that<br />

country as a world power.<br />

The collection shows <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study and<br />

conservation <strong>of</strong> this documentation as an invaluable<br />

artistic and historical legacy and as an inseparable<br />

component <strong>of</strong> a new model <strong>of</strong> sustainable development.<br />

It contains 1821 manuscripts by José Martí and<br />

415 documents on Martí or related to him. The collection<br />

also includes correspondence, notably with his family.
