His literature helped Cuban and Latin American culture
to flourish in a period of vibrant creativity. Together with
the praise of the great personalities of culture, science,
industry and politics, he gives us portraits of his time and
an even more penetrating study of the social restlessness
of the final years of the 19th century.
His texts have been translated to several languages
because of their literary value and their theses on the
spirit of America in favour of a humanism seen from
the universe of the poor of this Earth.
As a witness and decisive player in the international
relations of his time, Martí’s documents are extremely

valuable. His writings succeed in showing the diplomatic,
political and economic manoeuvres of the inventors of Pan
Americanism – an instrument of the groups of power in
the United States of America – in the construction of that
country as a world power.
The collection shows the importance of the study and
conservation of this documentation as an invaluable
artistic and historical legacy and as an inseparable
component of a new model of sustainable development.
It contains 1821 manuscripts by José Martí and
415 documents on Martí or related to him. The collection
also includes correspondence, notably with his family.
