In 1810, during the Napoleonic Wars, the French
surrendered to a British invasion force. The archives
continue to record the use of slaves on Mauritius under
British rule until slavery was abolished in 1835 and include
weekly reports of the distribution of government slaves,
returns showing the number of slaves imported into
Mauritius either as domestic servants or permanently
transferred, returns on the number of slaves transferred
from Mauritius to its dependencies, returns of the number
of marriages legally solemnized between slaves and
returns on the number and names of slaves levied upon
or sold for taxes.
The Mauritius Archives is the custodian of most
of the administrative records dating back as far as 1715.
The successive governments of the country from 1715
to date have shown their interest in the preservation
of these records.
