3.3 Reasons for immigration<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terviewees were asked whether various specified<br />

reasons for immigrat<strong>in</strong>g applied to them. The majority of the<br />

surveyed migrants were motivated to immigrate to <strong>Germany</strong><br />

on more than one ground. More than half of those who were<br />

not born <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> (61 per cent) state at least two grounds for<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Germany</strong>.<br />

The most common ground for migrat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Germany</strong> is<br />

migration as part of a migrat<strong>in</strong>g family (62 per cent) or to jo<strong>in</strong><br />

family members already resident <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> (41 per cent). For<br />

almost 22 per cent of the <strong>in</strong>terviewed immigrants, work prospects<br />

constituted an important factor <strong>in</strong> their decision to come<br />
