are quite religious. Considerable differences apply between<br />

the groups of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

A disproportionally large number of <strong>Muslim</strong>s from<br />

Turkey and North Africa are quite religious or very religious.<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from Southeast Europe and Iran have<br />

less pronounced religiousness. Comparisons between<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s and people belong<strong>in</strong>g to other religions<br />

moreover show that strong religiousness is not specific<br />

to <strong>Muslim</strong>s. For most groups of orig<strong>in</strong> there are only<br />

slight differences <strong>in</strong> the degree of religiousness between<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s and members of other religions.<br />

One third of <strong>Muslim</strong>s state that they pray every day. At<br />

42 per cent, the proportion of Sunnis who pray every<br />

day is highest. 20 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s <strong>in</strong>terviewed<br />

never pray.<br />

The pray<strong>in</strong>g practice of <strong>Muslim</strong>s from the Middle East<br />

is polarised: A third of them state that they never pray.<br />

At the same time, 42 per cent pray every day. Among<br />

all other groups of orig<strong>in</strong> pray<strong>in</strong>g habits tend to go <strong>in</strong><br />

either one direction or the other.<br />

Almost 70 per cent of the <strong>Muslim</strong>s <strong>in</strong>terviewed celebrate<br />

religious festivals and holidays. Among these,<br />

80 per cent of Sunnis state that they celebrate religious<br />

festivals. Somewhat more than half of Alevis and people<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g to other <strong>Islam</strong>ic denom<strong>in</strong>ations observe<br />

religious holidays. Just under 40 per cent of Shiites observe<br />

religious festivals.
