with migrants from other <strong>Muslim</strong> countries of<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The majority of <strong>in</strong>terviewees are <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment<br />

or vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Here, there are significant<br />

differences between <strong>Muslim</strong>s and members of other<br />

religions, which largely result from a higher proportion<br />

of work <strong>in</strong> the home and vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />

a lower level of ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment and unemployment<br />

among <strong>Muslim</strong>s.<br />

With regard to the rate of ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment, the<br />

situation of the other migrants from <strong>Muslim</strong> countries<br />

of orig<strong>in</strong> is similar to that of the Turkish population.<br />

More than 50 per cent of men from all countries of<br />

orig<strong>in</strong> and all religions are <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment; <strong>in</strong><br />

many cases the level exceeds 60 per cent, and with regard<br />

to <strong>Muslim</strong>s from Central Asia/CIS it is even above<br />

80 per cent. The employment rate for women is far<br />

lower than for men <strong>in</strong> all <strong>in</strong>stances, however. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly,<br />

the proportion of women who are housewives<br />

is higher and fluctuates between 14 and 21 per cent.<br />

Women from Central Asia/CIS have a much higher rate<br />

of ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment than women from the other<br />

countries of orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

The above average rate of self-employment is strik<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

especially among migrants from Iran, South/Southeast<br />

Asia and the Middle East and among members of other<br />

religious communities from Turkey and North Africa.<br />
