of their own and dependency on transfer payments is comparatively<br />

low. There are great gender-specific differences with regard<br />

to participation <strong>in</strong> employment and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Even women<br />

with a higher standard of education are not ga<strong>in</strong>fully employed.<br />

With regard to social <strong>in</strong>tegration there is a relatively high level<br />

of contact and openness to people of German orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

6.8 <strong>Muslim</strong>s from other parts of Africa<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong>s from other parts of Africa are an extremely small<br />

and very heterogeneous group. The group comprises a total of<br />

between 52,000 and 72,000 people who come from 14 different<br />

countries. They make up just under 2 per cent of all <strong>Muslim</strong>s<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>. The majority of African <strong>Muslim</strong>s are Sunnis;<br />

however, a significant proportion (17 per cent) belongs to a denom<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

that is not further specified.<br />

A disproportionately high number of <strong>Muslim</strong>s from other<br />

parts of Africa are male and emigrated from abroad themselves.<br />

The average age and the average length of time <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> is<br />

relatively low compared with other groups. The most frequent<br />

reasons cited for migrat<strong>in</strong>g are seek<strong>in</strong>g refuge or flee<strong>in</strong>g persecution<br />

<strong>in</strong> another country. The proportion of <strong>Muslim</strong>s from<br />

other parts of Africa with German nationality stands at 37 per<br />

cent – somewhat lower than for <strong>Muslim</strong>s as a whole.<br />

In l<strong>in</strong>e with the high proportion of people who entered<br />

<strong>Germany</strong> as adults, the proportion of African <strong>Muslim</strong>s who attended<br />

school <strong>in</strong> their country of orig<strong>in</strong> is also extremely high.<br />

The rate of employment is average. With regard to ga<strong>in</strong>ful employment,<br />

it is strik<strong>in</strong>g that most people <strong>in</strong> this group are whitecollar<br />

workers. Wages and salaries are a source of <strong>in</strong>come for<br />

three quarters of the households.
