14 per cent. Between 5 and 8 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s come<br />

from South/Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle<br />

East. People of Iranian orig<strong>in</strong> and <strong>Muslim</strong>s from<br />

other parts of Africa each make up 2 per cent, and less<br />

than 1 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s come from Central Asia/CIS.<br />

98 per cent of <strong>Muslim</strong>s liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> live <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Federal States which made up West <strong>Germany</strong> prior to<br />

reunification. They are widely distributed across these<br />

states. Most <strong>Muslim</strong>s live <strong>in</strong> the densely populated<br />

state of North Rh<strong>in</strong>e-Westphalia (33 per cent).<br />

Around 45 per cent of all <strong>Muslim</strong>s liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong><br />

with a migrant background from a predom<strong>in</strong>antly<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong> country are German nationals. There are approximately<br />

1.7 – 2.0 million German <strong>Muslim</strong>s. A further<br />

2.1 – 2.3 million <strong>Muslim</strong>s are foreign nationals.<br />

There is a particularly high <strong>in</strong>stance of naturalisation<br />

among <strong>Muslim</strong>s, immigrants and their families orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from South/Southeast Asia, the Middle East<br />

and North Africa. <strong>Muslim</strong>s from Central Asia/CIS and<br />

Southeast Europe have a comparatively low rate of<br />

naturalisation.<br />

Only around half of all people with a migrant background<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> from countries with a relevant<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong> population are <strong>Muslim</strong>s. With regard<br />

to religious affiliation, there are usually considerable<br />

discrepancies between the immigrants liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong><br />

and the population <strong>in</strong> the respective countries of<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>.
