5.1.1.2 Comparison between the countries of orig<strong>in</strong><br />

Among the <strong>Muslim</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewees with a migrant background<br />

63 per cent have attended school <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong>, while the<br />

correspond<strong>in</strong>g figure for the Christian <strong>in</strong>terviewees stands at<br />

39 per cent. The respective proportions reflect the age structure<br />

at the time of immigration. The highest share of <strong>in</strong>terviewees<br />

who received their school<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Germany</strong> is to be found among<br />

<strong>Muslim</strong> and non-<strong>Muslim</strong> Turkish migrants (66 per cent, 73 per<br />

cent) and among migrants from North Africa (63 per cent, 80<br />

per cent), while the lowest levels apply among migrants from<br />

Central Asia/CIS (14 per cent, 31 per cent).<br />

45 per cent of all <strong>in</strong>terviewees who attended school <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Germany</strong> also attended school <strong>in</strong> their country of orig<strong>in</strong>. This <strong>in</strong>dicates<br />

that almost half of the immigrant pupils were so-called<br />

“lateral entrants” <strong>in</strong>to the German education system. Some of
